when I drive the truck for a while and shut her off she sputters and keeps runing, I believe this is called deiseling correct? What woudl cause that? The carb was recently rebuilt, but I believe my choke is not working properly I need to buy a new electric choke. I have a Holley 4160 on a 460 engine.
It is caused by high cylinder temps with carbon build up. The carbon heats up red hot and when you kill the ignition, the glowing carbon acts like a glow plug and continues to fire the fuel in the cylinders.
Common causes of this are a lean condition which elevates cylinder temps, too fast of an idle, and heavy carbon build-up in the combustion chamber. Any of these conditions combined with low octane fuel will cause it to diesel (IE: run without a spark plug)
ok, my idle is high, its set at about 1300 rpm in park and idles around 900 in gear, I need to adjust it, but the choke is in need of replacement so this si the best way to keep her running right now, I'll try and lower the idle but she doesn't like to run if I do, we'll see what happens.
As long as the choke is open, you will be ok. It may take a minute to keep it running when cold. Your mixture screws may need adjusted out some if it doesn't want to idle about 650 to 700 in gear.
