87 f150 4x4 4spd work truck, daily driven light pulling.
Looking at a pretty mild build, min overbore, 9.5:1 crane cam, keep EFI manifolds and walker, no cat glasspack or simmilar.
Not looking for a miracle but would like a little more pick up.
How much, if any headwork is needed with this build? Anything else to keep in mind?
since the 300 is built for torque, all you'd really need would be a valve job (if it was even needed) and mild porting and polishing, at best... if you're going with a bigger cam, most of the major makers recommend heavier springs and better retainers and locks, which would necessitate, or at least be highly recommended that you get screw in studs. you could upgrade to the better ratio rockers while you were at it, but that is optional. if you were planning on the BBC rockers, make sure and get the 7/16th stud instead of the 3/8th stud when you get the screw ins. if you go with the chebby inline rockers, you can keep the 3/8ths. IMO, if you want the bigger ROLLER rockers, its worth it to go with the BBC rollers instead of the inlines, since they're so much cheaper, and you get a stronger stud when you do screw ins, but thats just a matter of personal preference (my plan...).
The EFI head already has screw in studs....sorta. They are actually the bolt down pedestal rockers. I wouldn't mess with changing them to anything else, it's not worth it.
Since it's an EFI you probably don't want to get too radical on the mods...the "brain" may become disoriented and cause a whole different set of running problems.
Thanks for the replies. Still kicking around exactly what I'll do with this.
It's a completely different animal than the 300 I built for the bronco. Mileage and drivability are much bigger factors, as is the speed density as harte brought out. Basicly just looking for another 200k at a little better than stock.
