Axle tage decoding needed!!!!

Hey all,

Found an rearend at the salvage yard that I need the axle tag decoded so I can determine what it is.

axle tag reads A309ASLT3758L10

WITH VIN # 1FTCR15TOKPA222635

I got an 86 Ranger with a 5liter. (stock 4 banger rear is chattering.) I think It might have had its second to last burn out...(one wheel wonder)

I need to swap out my 4 banger axle to a 8.8 preferabbly with LS.

Any one know if a exploder axle with disc is a do-able swap?

I can't tell anything from the numbers you gave me. The VIN is too old to run an OASIS to get the rear axle code that way.

The tag on the rear axle cover should look like the following:

You can also look in the door jamb for an axle code under "AX". Compare it to the following chart for the Ranger:

You can swap to an Explorer rear axle. It requires relocation of the shock and spring mounts. I've also heard that you can use the original Explorer spring mounts to lower the truck (similar to a flip kit). It all depends on your fabrication skills and resources. Otherwise, stick with a Ranger 8.8. Explorer rear discs can be easily swapped to one of those as well.

Here are the Explorer Rear axle codes in case you need them.

(Thanks to TRS for the charts)

the drivers door was removed from the truck... so no vin tag to make this easy...

but the axle tag read like this

A 309A
SLT73758L10

I ran the vin and it came out to be a 1989 2.9 V-6 4x4

so it might not even be a 8.8 unless it was swapped?!?!?!?!

Yes, it's probably not an 8.8.

To be sure, compare these pictures to the differential:

K = 1989

R15 = Ranger Super Cab Pickup

T = 2.9 V6

I have every rear axle code from 1980/89. Nothing on the tag code you posted can be decoded from the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog. The catalog doesn't say whether a Super Cab came with an 8.8, but there are two 8.8 rear axles listed for a 1989 Ranger, locking and non locking. The only axle ratios available on the 8.8 that are remotely close to the number you posted are: 3.08-1 and 3.73-1. Maybe someone here has a Super Cab, and can tell you whether it has an 8.8 or not. I believe the SC's did come with an 8.8, but I can't prove it.

First off, thanks for info.
I've been searching threads and i'm hoping i've come to the right place...

From what i've read here, my Ranger has an l/s 8.8 in the rear..
But all this got me to wondering, does this apply for the front end too?
If not, how would you identify what you're runnig out front?
The ranger in question is equiped with warn locking hubs, which i read somewhere to be a factory option that year(92) I'd love to find out if it was true or not.

If your '92 Ranger is a 4x4, then it will have a Dana 35 front axle. A stock Dana 35 front axle is not limited slip. The front axle gear ratio will correspond with the rear axle gear ratio.

Yeah, they can't put different gears in the front or the t-case would rip it's self apart. The last year that I know of that ford offered a lsd in the front, was 79 in the F-150. My dad ordered his 79 back then, and got the front lsd option with 4:11 gears. I don't know if it was offered after that or not, but never in a ranger that I know of.

Of course the gearing would be the same.
I was more or less wonder if it was a dana 30 or 35, is the dana 35 the only axle to have been used in the rangers/B-series?
Thanks!....

'83-'89 Rangers used a Dana 28 up front. '90-'92 = Dana 35. '93-'97 gets complicated, some used real Dana 35's while others used what appears to be an Dana 35 on the outside with Dana 28 guts. '98+ goes back to Dana 35.
