in tank fuel pump

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-01 AT 08:00 PM (EST)]I had to replace my in tank fuel pump on my 94 Bronco this weekend and was wondering if anyone else had done this before? I am asking because I wanted to know if you used the butt splices to connect the new pump or did you use some other method? It just seems wierd to have splices in the gas tank.

The new pump came with the butt splices and the directions said to use them.?.?

I replaced the pump on my 95 (151000 miles) and used the splice connectors. I thought it was weird to, all I know is that I DO NOT WANT TO GO THROUGH THAT ##### AGAIN CHANGING IT OUT, so the wires better stay connected.

Personally, I would have soldered them and sealed them with shrink tubing. I just have a thing against crimp connectors in general, as too many of them have come loose in my years of driving off highway.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Dec-01 AT 02:48 PM (EST)]I've used the butt connectors before, no problem. But the last time I did it I soldered and heat shrank (shrunk? shrinked? LOL). I made a point to first stick some heat shrink in a glass jar for a day w/gasoline to see if the gas would eat it. After a day it had not so I figured it was ok. And to the poster who said he doesn't want to "go thru that again," go thru this next time:

I agree with Honney.....you need to solder these together. The soldering iron is about $6 bucks at your local hardware store. You may also want to think about putting in an access plate so you can get into it from the top if you are thinking of keeping your bronco for a long time. Good luck!!!

A friend that works for Napa gave me some butt splices that have heat shrink built into the ends. I am going to drop the tank and use these instead. They crimp in the middle and are slighty longer on the ends for the attached heat shrink. They look pretty cool and he said they also sell them at Radio Shack. My Bronco is not my daily driver so I don't mind letting it sit for a few more days.
Thanks for all the input.

I've replaced my in-tank fuel pump twice now in my 90 bigbronco. Both times I sodered them and used heat shrink. This is the best way to go...
