I noticed when I balanced the right side exhaust manifold the other day that I had what looked like oil leaking out of the side of the engine on top of where the exhaust manifold connected. Also when I reinstalled the manifold and started the engine I heard a clacking sound. and it sounded its coming from inside the engine block. Could this be a leaking head gasket which is related to the leak? If it were to be a leaking head gasket...is it driveable for my xmas break home?
Oil leaking from the top side of the manifold would actually be coming from the valve cover. An oil leak in the head gasket would be indicated by burning oil, antifreeze in your oil, gas in your oil, or oil leaking from the bottom side of the head or the where the lower part of the manifold connects to the engine block. It sounds like a valve cover, and isn't a big deal to wait on replacing, but make sure to keep oil in the pan.
The clacking noise could be related, or maybe not. It all depends on where the noise is coming from as to what it could be. If is loud and sounds like it is coming from the center or bottom of the engine, could be bad bearings on the crank, cam, or rods. If the noise comes from the top side of the engine, could be the valves (some noise is normal on startup until the oil circulates).
