i got my chip yesterday and i am going to install it today. my question is when you rub off the silicon coating on the contacts is it ok to also rub off the copper coating too?? i ask because i have gotton mixed reviews and i already rubbed off some of the copper and exposed the silver.
You want to remove the silicone ONLY, a little copper missing shouldn't hurt. My contacts are missing copper all over them (from chips being in and out). So far no problem.
Here's what I got from Jody. The contacts on the board are copper, but covered with some solder for a better connection to a chip. If you rub too hard, you will take off all the solder and the bare copper will show. The color will change from silver to the bright copper color. THIS IS BAD - DO NOT REMOVE THE SILVER DOWN TO THE COPPER. If you do, the connection between the chip and the board could be comprimised.
If the silver does get scrubbed off, there is a fix and it can be done successfully, but it's tedious...trust me on this one. If you get down to bare copper, the contacts have to be "retinned" with some solder to ensure a good connection with them and the chip. One has to be careful when doing this though as to not damage the board by overheating the contacts and melting the connection between the contacts and the board, rendering the board useless.
Point is, take off the silicon lightly clean the silver on the contacts, but don't scrub too hard.
