Rubbing Compound

I have a few minor scratches and such that I would like to get out. I haven't done any polishing since I bought the truck and I'm wondering if rubbing compound would be a bad idea. I know that some of them are not meant for clear coat finishes. The stuff I have says nothing about clear coats and I don't even know if my truck has a clear coat. Anyone else use Turtle Wax Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound without any problems?

Try using 3m Hand Glaze.. it can get out a lot of scratches without scratching the paint like most rubbing compounds. It is available at most auto parts stores. You may have to use two or three applications but the stuff is fantastic. A plus to the stuff is that if you use it on the whole car it gives it that kewl wet look.

to the best of my knowledge any of the turtle wax stuff is too heavy for the clear coat i was told never to use the heavy rubbing compound in the red can or the polishing compound in the green can
i was also told glazing compound is better but i have no clue where to get it except at an auto body supply or at keystone automotive

I've had great results removing light scratches using the clear coat safe cleaner types of waxes.

I have a Meguiers kit that's served me well. Any of the compounds have to be clear coat safe or you'll have a real mess on your hands with micro scratches.

Good luck!

I'd keep that rubbing compound off the clear coat. A buddy of mine made a real mess out of a car that had clear coat on it; he used turtle wax (not even the rubbing compound; wax) and that was clear back in 1988. Look into McGuires products, they make a fine cut cleaner and wax (two bottles, not all in one) that work really well. I'm sure that other good brands are out there as well.

Fine cut cleaner is still a fairly strong compound. I use the professional clay bar, followed by clear coat body scrub, then #9 Swirl Remover, possibly #7 Show Car Glaze, followed by #26 Hi-Tech Yellow wax. I only do this once or twice a year when I really have the time. Normally I just use Meguiar's cleaner/wax. I think the #9 removes most light swirls and such. It would really work magic if you had a dual-action buffer.

Dang. That is a lot of different supplies. I had goten used to using just a rubbing compound and Carnuba Wax. Guess I'm running to the parts store to pic up a bunch of stuff. There goes all my Christmas money.

You do not have to do all that stuff, but I am 20 and have a lot of free time with no job... My dad also buys all of the stuff, as long as I use it on his truck too... It is really a waste unless you are a care care guru like me.

I would definately try the HAND GLAZE by 3m. Its fairly cheap and gets minor scracthes out with some elbo greese. Be warned it does really shine the spot you use it on so plan on doing the whole truck. And it is not a wax. So you'll have to wax it afterward.
