My passenger window has just quit working a couple of times. Neither side will work when it does it. If it was the window motor wouldn't it quit completely? It acts like its just a short or something. Anyone had this problem?
When you say neither side works, I assume you mean that neither the drivers switch or the passenger switch will operate the window. The easiest way to see if it is the motor is to pull out the passenger switch and use a test light to see if you have power at the switch. If you have power there, it is probably the motor. You also need to make sure that your window goes up and down smoothly and is not binding at all. If the window binds, it will overheat the motor causing it to temporarily stop working until it cools down.
Yes, neither switch will operate the window. If I do have power at the switch, will the motor not go completely out? The last time I had this problem, I had left the window down overnight and the next morning (and day) would not roll up. It doesn't appear to be binding on anything.
I have had experiences where the motor will work intermitently, so yes, it is possible that the motor has not completely failed. You may also want to take the door panel off and check the connector that plugs into the motor itself to make sure it is clean. You can also try moving the wires in the area of the rubber boot that goes into the door from the body to make sure that you dont have a broken wire that is causing an intermittent connection. Do you notice the problem after a rain? Sometimes water gets onto things inside the door, especially if your window seals have the common Super Duty warpage. Wet connections can cause intermittent function.
A weak resistor on the motor's board will cause the same problem. You can take the cover off the motor and wrap the resitor with aluminum~foil to increase the voltage.
