I recently bought a 1999 e-150 and the gas mileage is terrible as i posted earlier. My friend was about to put in a new air filter and we noticed the fresh air intake hose was missing.
Why would anyone take this off and leave it off? This is similar to a ram air set up and i would assume going over 30 mph would give some boost in free air. Wouldn't this part missing make a significant differance in gas mileage?
And BTW, I don't understand they Ford chose to make the inlet to the air canister only 2 inchs.
If the Vans are anything like the trucks it is very common to take the silencer off and even cut most of the filter housing off. Turns the 2" intake into 10". The way the F150's are set up there is no ram air to it, it could get colder air from the fender well but when going down the road it really doesn't matter.
I would doubt you will see much, if any, increase in mpg wit it back on. As said, going down the road, the temp difference is negligible (from the tests I've seen) and you can forget about any ram air effect.
If your '99 looks the same as the 5.4 I looked at it, has an elbow leading the track into to the radiator support area (middle front). It does look like a ram air, but you would have to be moving REAL fast and have it sealed up better. Even then...
It is likely routed that way to suppress noise more than anything.
I removed the one on my F150 from the fender and gained all around, not a whole lot, but it was noticeable.
BTW There's an E-series forum down the line a little. What kind of MPG are you getting? What are the specs on the vehicle?
