While on a trip with my '91 f53 I developed a high running engine. I discovered a vacuum leak. Between the venturi in the fresh air intake and the manifold below the throtle body there is a 3/4 inch hose with a plastic cylinder that looks like a check valve on a brake booster. I took it off and it was hollow like it lost its guts allowing air into the manifold. Ford says it is an obsolete part, and the parts people don't know what it is. I took a wine cork and insterted it in the hose and drilled a hole in it to allow air to give me a idleing rpm. Question - what is it ? Where can I get one ? I have no cold start high idle without it.
Wow. Yeah.
We need pics or something.
What engine are you referring to. I'm assuming 460 cause you mentioned venturi in the intake hose. The hose comming from the venturi thing should go onto an idle air valve that's bolted onto the upper intake below the throttle body.
I just can't think of anything that looks like the brake booster check valve.
Sorry guys, I got ahead of myself. It is a 460 in an rv. Thank you subford for the schematic. This canister goes rught between the break in the two highlighted hoses. Here are two photos of part I am talking about
It's weird that you have a high idle after that part went bad.
I don't remember that being on my 460 trucks. I'm away so I can't go check so hopefully someone else will say its on their truck.
I gotta say it's weird that the canister is causing a high idle, unless it's guts come out and jammed into the idle air valve that's bolted onto the intake.
Check to make sure the iac valve isn't stuck or has a piece of something stuck in it.
My 460 RV class "A" does not have a check valve in that hose. If that is what it is.
The hose has no brakes in it from the upper intake to the filtered air hoses to the throttle body.
All of the Ford shop manuals from 1992-1996 do not show anything in that hose for the Class "A" 460 Motorhome.
Sorry I do not have a shop manual for the 1990-1991 Motorhome but my 1989 Class "A" Motorhome 460 Ford shop manual shows the same diagram as posed above for the 1992-1996.
First off, I want to thank subford and untamnd for your input. Today, I took the entire air intake off and sure enough, there is a air bypass valve beneath the throttle body that I couldn't see before. Following the vacuum leak while on the trip led me to the hose from the venturi to the throttle body. That is where I found the canister inline and figured that was the cause of the leak. As you both stated, there is no canister in the schematic so the mystery still goes on. Being a ford part what is it for ? Did someone put it in later ? We'll probably never find out. Anyway, I took the air bypass valve off, and it was the root of the problem. I purcased a new valve today from the ford dealer. I asked the parts man what he thought about the canister as his schematic didn't show one. He didn't have an answer either. Since it was on before, I replaced it in case it does have a purpose. I know this is long winded, but figured you might want to know the outcome. Thanks again to all.
I know this is an old post but my truck has this same piece so I was trying to figure out what it was and I found this post--- then I found another thread somewhere else and this is what it said about this part---"It's a resonator tuned to cancel out pulses that echo up & down that tube, causing a drone or growl in the cab. It's like a tuned speaker enclosure, but it's OUT of tune to eliminate instead of amplify the sound." just thought I would share wm.
I have a 1996 ford f250 7.5 with the 460 and I have the same thing. I took mine off to check the inside of the valve and it has nothing on the inside. Is it supposed to have something on the inside? Can you please post a pic of the part you got from the dealership to replace it. I still have to check and see if anything is blocking the connection to the intake.
