Headgasket?

Well i picked up a 1997 Ford F150 Ext Cab XL,4x4 5 speed manual...has the 4.6L Triton

anyways...we knew something was up with the motor but got a good deal on the truck so we took it anyways.

the truck as 210,00 KILOMETERES(not miles)

but when you look under the oil cap....there is a white residue on the bottom of the oil filler cap...now i was told that this could be headgaskets?...causing antifreeze to leak into the motor and burn up?

also the antifreeze is a really brown color..and i dont think it has ever been changed.....i am doing an oil change and antifreeze change on it tommorow...so i will see

but anyone know what causes this white residue on the oil cap?...my brothers 97 150 2WD with the 4.2L V6 also started doing the same thing a couple thousand KM ago...he is at 230,000KM...and they thought it was intake gaskets....so they changed those..but it still has the same problem.

anyways..pretty much just wondering if anyone knows what would be causing this residue and how to fix it.....also any other things that should be changed after that many KM?...i dont think any maitnenace has been done to it except oil changes and he put a brand new transfer case in.

Head gasket sounds like a good bet to me, Espically with brown coolant as well. As for other fluid and stuff, tranny gear oil, rear and front diff oil, plugs(Motorcraft), wires, fuel filter, pcv valve just for starters. a pressure test neesd to be done on the coolant system to see if there is a coolant leak and where it may be. Good Luck!

I havea 2003 ext cab 4x4 5.4. I get the white residue on the bottom of the fill cap. I thought head gasket, but the dealer says it is condensation build up. It is caused by the high fill neck at the valve cover not getting enough heat in a short run. I had a pressure test done and everything showed OK. I marked the dagas box to to monitor fluid level, it has not dropped at all in four months. There are several other post on her with the same issue. Check under the fill cap after you have driven for more than 30 miles. I have no residue after that. May or may not be your problem, good luck!!

The white stuff under the oil cap is from condensation in the crankcase. Generally it comes from lots of short trips. There is not enough time up at operating temp to "burn off" the moisture. If you cahnge the oil, and drive it for longer periods, it will probably go away eventually. It shouldn't hurt anything either way. Changing the PCV might help too.

As for the brown anti-freeze, I say change and flush and see what happens. If its been in there for a while it will certainly turn brown without having oil in it. I'm gonna bet your head gaskets are OK. Good luck.

wow i think you guys saved me alot of headache.

well when we went to look at the truck it had been sitting since June...and i pulled the oil cap and found white residue...so we wiped it clean and took it for a 5 minute test drive...the cap had residue all over it again....so we talked the guy down because we figured we would have to do head gaskets.

well it was a 3 hour drive home from where i picked the truck up...and i checked my cap...sure enough CLEAN AS CAN BE!!

i guess you do gotta drive over 30 miles...i am just so glad that it is not the head gaskets...that would have been a big job.

i am going to replace the PCV valve anyways just to be safe...as well as plugs ,fuel filter and i am doing and Oil and Antifreeze change tonight..

any other things i should look for after just buying this truck?

Modular head gaskets are MLS(multi-layer-steel),and I've never seen one blown.I've seen plenty of them that seep oil at the rear of the passenger side, but none blown like you would have on the older pushrod engines. I know of a few seriuosly powerful Lightnings that have stretched ARP headstuds enough to lift the heads and blow coolant out,and even they haven't blow the gasket. After a cooldown-their engines and gaskets are fine and they've been running around on them for some time now with no leaks.

thats good information to know...i have just heard so much about head gaskets being gone if there is white residue..and i guess i panicked a little.

i am glad i don't gotta do that huge job now....i can put money into other things...like headers...since i got the infamous manifold leak.

Brown anti-freeze is probly rust from the block. Flush it good, and carry on. Do these engines have brass freeze plugs? If not, keep a close eye on them, they love to rust away when the coolant hasn't been maintained. Rob

Modulars use zinc coated steel freeze plugs, and I have honeslty never seen one of those rusted out either.

Ford's 4.6L,5.4L,and 6.8L engines are known as the "modular" engine. They all share some components and the same bore spacing among other things. This applies to both the truck and car engines.

Triton just refers to the truck version of the modular. All truck modulars are "Tritons" with the exception of the Navigator "Intech".
