Certainly a lot simpler to run then in front of the rear tires, since you don't have to mess around going over the axle. Also means that when you back into parking blocks and snow banks, you don't bend the pipes.
I belive the factory setup was behind the tires though.

The only thing with coming out from in front of the wheels is, you will hear it more inside the cab (if that matters to you). Also, it's a bit louder the shorter the exhaust. So, really if you don't care how loud it is in the cab or not go with in front. I personally like the looks coming out of the back and don't like it too loud in the cab.

Depends what sound and how much noise you want....when I was young, if I had to put new exhaust on something, it was in front of the tires. Even put a single pipe ahead of the rear tires on a '78 Dodge Powerwagon with a slant six (exiting on the right side, so I didn't have to listen to it)....now that I'm older and crankier, I prefer mellower and less-obnoxious noise. My '79 F-250 and '76 LTD both have dual pipes out behind the tires, with turbos. Glasspacks and full exhaust sound pretty good, but I'm not too enthused about short pipes and glasspacks.

I put 2" duals on my '77 F150 with a 351M and put them with the stock exit behind the rear tires, and they sound great, nice and loud.

I perfer the stock exit because they look like duals from the factory, and it's funny to surprise people.

Just make sure if you run true dual exhaust you connect them with some sort of H pipe to equalize the back pressure.
