I finished boxing in L-pillars yesterday and not only does look a lot better, it works great in terms of denying the birds their preferred nesting spot. I should of done it years ago.
I have a few other areas around the house/roof where there are eave-like ornaments (this is a 90-year old house), underneath them are small ledges where I've also seen a bird hanging out on occasion. I'm gonna try the nails-in-the-wood trick in those spots, for now.
I'll be re-siding the house, hopefully this summer or next, and when I'm having that done I'll be able to modify those areas permanently so that they will no longer provide a suitable hang-out location for any kind of bird (or other critter, for that matter).
I've seen the owl figurines keep pigeons away, and also I have seen 2 ft. black
squiggly lines painted on surfaces to keep 'em off flat surfaces. The place I work for
uses a material that has 4 inch plastic bristles that stick out of a plastic sheet the
width of toilet paper. Blood could be harder to clean up than the poop.
The most effective way we used to deal with birds in our aircraft hangar was poisoned perches. That supposedly could endanger raptors eating the dead birds so we quite, but if you are not where that's a problem it would work great.
I LOVE the cement trick. Too bad I don't have any critters I can test it on.
You could also try diazinon in a birdbath near their roost.
if ya winde up with coons or other rodent fly bait and coke a cola works to they eat it and makeit about 6 feet youll beable to find them there and dispose of them in a matter so that know one knows about your doings.just do not throw them in the trunk of an old car goin to the shredder!! (long story)
I've seen farmers use propane canon's to scare of black birds from grain fields. Of course it goes "Ka-Blam" periodically. If you are in an area where you could get in trouble for "baiting" them, check with a local pest control company; the will be licensed to do whatever is legal in your area. You could try putting a big fake owl up there and move it around from time to time.
Boxing in those ornamental places with siding or other materials will help. Sometimes adding nails to an area just makes it easier for them to wedge sticks in for a nest... They will really be smirking at you then!!!
