The battle of the centuries.....Electronic Fuel Injection vs Carburetion.
I am getting a 460 Transplanted into my Bronco, I am still debating if im to get an EFI 460 or just go with a CARB version, im asking you guys your personal opinion and some un-biast facts to help me along with my convertion, CARB or EFI im still using an automatic transmission, maby you guys can give me some pointers on which TRANS I should get too?
Well,if you decide on a carbed 460,I don't think the computer-controlled E4OD will work.I kind heard some company might be offering a stand alone system,so one could be used in a non-EFI application, but I don't remember what company .If you bronco is a late-model EFI-engined model,I'd lean towards going with a EFI460 taken out of a F-250/F-350/or van. You'll also need the donor vehicles computer&wiring harness. To rewire the Bronco will cost a lot (unless you are good at that sort of stuff...I'm not.),but a EFI460 kept stock-or close to it-will pass emissions tests easier, and get better fuel mileage than a 460 that is carbed.EFI engines are said to start much easier when it's cold outside,so if you drive it everyday, and live in a place that has cold temperatures, you might want to consider this.If your Bronco has a EFI engine&you want to run a 460 4-V,you'll have to change your fuel pump....EFI in tank pump has too much pressure for a carb application. In the short term it may be easier/cheaper to go with a 460 4-V,but in the long term, the EFI460 would be better.I've had a 460 4-V&still have a EFI460.The carbed version had an drinking problem:+ 7 mpg(at the most),while I can get 11-12 mpg with the EFI460&4.10:1 gearing!Granted the 460 4-V I had was in a 1974 Lincoln sedan(sweet car!),but it had something like a 2.75:1 axle ratio...I couldn't imagine if it had something steep like a 4.10:1 ratio. What you use your Bronco for should help you decide.Any 460...whether wearing a carb,or EFI should make a 104.7" wheelbase truck a tire-screechin',blast to drive! It's hard to argue with four-hundred sixty cubic inches of 385-series big-block.
Thanks a lot man, im aware of the bell housing situation, as i have said in another post this is a ground up restoration, full on body off stuff, mostly because its an former north-eastern to mid-western to me kinda truck and there is more rust on it then one could only imangine. But I will have it dont by late febuary, mid march. I think I will go with the 4V 460EFI (unless someone else can give me a good reasion not to). and a rebuilt c6, and trust me, I have the money to do it.
you said you are doing a ground up restoration. How much rust do u have? My '86 is really bad, but i've been debating whether or not to fix it up. I live in PA so u can imagine bad it is.
Have u started with your body work yet? what year do u have?
