Idol Problem!!! PLease help me out here folks!!!

After my truck is slightly warmed up it tends to stall. I find that when its cold and completly warm it has no problem. Its just the time inbetween. The RPM's seem to drop a little under .5 RPM's. Is there anyway to fix this by ajusting the idol? Or should I be looking somwhere else for the cause of this?

I am guessing that you 83 has a carb. It is probably the choke. Make sure that when it is cold that the choke plate is closing. You can also adjust the choke idle. It is on the left side of the carb. You will see a small screw just under the round choke spring cover. On the EFI engine this procedure is handled by the Air bypass valve assembly. Also check TSB # 91-25-7 and 96-20-16.

Yeah, that is the one thing I have no checked. When did do a full tune up I noticed my Transmission fluid was low so I added some thinking that might solve it. It didnt but I think ajusting choke just might do the trick. Is there anything to worry about once it gets warmer out? Will I have to reajust it? And after I find the screw should I turn it clock wise or counter clock wise? Thank you for all your help :-)

sometimes you may have to readjust the cold idle. That is the problem with carbs. They do not self adjust. One thing to remember is to let the vehicle warm up. A fuel injected vehicle can compensate to allow you to drive off with little warm up time. turn the screw clockwise to tighten it.

I also have an 86 302EFI. Try cleaning the air bypass valve and the throttle body. Pull the codes. Could be a couple of things.

I cleaned out both the throttle body and air bypass. I still have irregular idle when cold. Any ideas?

BTW, I have a '86 302 FI

Thanks

Jason86:

A couple of ideas, any of which may or may not be affecting your truck:

1) Slight vacuum leak (upper to lower intake gasket?). Could you have a gasket (or otherwise) which is sealing once the engine warms? I wouldn't think this would be likely, but I'm throwing it out there.

2) Temperature sensor (not the temperature sending unit, which sends a signal to the guage). This sensor lives in the front of the lower intake manifold, and tells the EEC to richen the mixture when the engine is cold, and lean it out as it warms up. It's about a $17 part. Since you mention that it's cold-related, I wonder if this could be faulty and leaning things out all the time, depriving your 302 of the richer condition when things are cold (the symptoms would be like those of a carbed engine with no choke).

3) Have you removed and checked the EGR valve port (where the valve bolts onto the throttle body) for carbon build-up? If this were dirty, I'd think it would affect idle when things were cold and warm (not just cold), but maybe it's just starting to block up and driveability is being affected more when the engine's cold.

Just a couple of thoughts...... best of luck!

Thanks for the help!

I would like to add that it doesn't stall while driving, only while in park. its getting very annoying, having to re-start it. recently I had it in the garage for a different stalling problem. the mechanic pulled the codes an cleared most of 'em. There was 3 left he couldn't clear:

1. 31- EGR(EVP/Ept) ckt. out of range
2. 87- primary fuel pump ckt fault
3. 18- no tach input or spout ckt open

i think the last one is was just the spout connector on the dist. needed connected, the 2nd i have no clue, nor did he. The first is probably related to the cold stall problem i have.

????

thanks guys
