Catlytic Converter Question

I just had a 40 series flowmaster muffler put on yesterday and my
91 Bronco still sounds whimpy. I asked the exhaust tech if he could
make it sound a little better and he said to get a cat conversion
(take off both of the cats and replace with one high flow cat and
putting on bigger tubing there). He said it would cost about $250. Is
there a cheaper way of doing this and still keeping my bronco street
legal, like removing one of the cats or something? HELP ME PLEASE!

Catlytic Converter Question

In the past, I've seen Cats run for close to $100 or more. So, his $250 total price might be a little high, but it wouldn't be a cheap one. Too bad you can't just take off the cat and insert a straight pipe. That'd solve it all, eh.

Catlytic Converter Question

High-flow cats have gotten considerably less expensive, and can be found in the $80 - $100 range. Your exhaust shop will probably not want to install one you bring in if he's wanting $250 for the whole job, so you may shop around and ask the different shops if they would install a converter you bring in. Some will, and some won't. The latter are usually concerned about the legality or quality of your part, so they're not necessarily concerned with you buying one from them. It all depends on the shop.

Catlytic Converter Question

Remove your second cat and leave the first one there and run a 3 inch pipe from the first cat to your flow. Thats what I did to my 95 F-150 with a 302. It made a big difference in sound and it runs considerably better.

I'm thinking of doing a similar conversion... did you replace the front "Y" convertor?
