ARGHH!!Its bugging the crap out of me.The plastic piece that goes around the radio and hold the ac vents has been pealing since ive had it. At first there were a couple scratches and it really didnt bother me.But now there are patches of the material it is covered in missing.I think it would look better if I just completely striped it of its paint and kept it black or maybe painted it the color as the outside.Sound like a good idea? What could I use to strip the paint but not dammage the plastic? What type of paint should i use to repaint it?Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to resolve it?
Had the same problem on my 03. Dealer wants a lot of money for a new one. The new ones aren't coated in rubber like the one you have. The rubber peels, as you have found. I used 600 sandpaper wet/dry and sanded it down and then used adhesion promoter, primer, basecoat, then clear. Most chemical strippers can damage plastics over timee... try eastwood. They have all kinds of stuff like that. Do you have an HVLP gun?? You could use automotive paints rather than rattle can paints if you want. Better durability and chemical resistance...
Its finished! Its amazing what a cheap hair dryer and some elbow grease can do!
Heres what it looked like before I started
Heres what It looked like after about 5 mins
It took me about 45 mins to clean everything off and clean up the mess on the floor haha. Heres what it looks like installed
Here it is!I think it looks alot better now than it did before. I still have to wipe it down because of all the fingerprints on it. Im still debating if I should leave it the black, or paint it flat black or paint it the same color as the exterior: candy apple red.Any suggests or comments?
I'd say go flat black. I've done the whole painting of the interior in the exterior color. It can look good, but looks out of place with just a few things done. Flat black is universal and looks good.
Here's what some well-spaced black will do on a grey-interior truck (with blue exterior). After doing black seat covers to match, plus the console and shift boot being black, I've gotten several compliments.
reminds me of my 94. I miss that tough truck. I put it through hell and back and kept on running. Is that a tach in ur air vent? I was thinking about doing that, how hard was it to mount and run the wires?
4 ways! lol. They're in the back now, I got Polk components up front (wonderful difference!).
It's a vacuum gauge in the "air vent" actually. It was pretty easy, I removed the vent panel (hardest part), popped out that filler where the 4x4 switch would go, and drilled a 2" hole from the front (very very carefully as to not crack the plastic vanes). Trim it up nice with a Dremel tool.
I ran the vacuum line up through the dash to the location where the gauge would go, then ran three wires back down the line (power, ground, and lighting). I taped the wires to the line to keep it all together, hooked up the wires, installed the line to the gauge, and pressed the gauge into place. Reinstalled the panel, hooked up the wires (now to my other aftermarket gauges...the best place, IMHO, is the ashtray light for lighting), and tested it out. Works great.
I had the same problem in 2002 Tremor after just a few months of purchasing it. I had it replaced under warranty but it is now doing it again. I like your idea of peeling it all off and leaving it black. The exterior is chrome yellow and I have accented it with all black. I have the black seat covers and black windows, bug deflector, and vent shades are in black. I still get asked if it is brand new and it is almost 5 years old.
