Bronco stalling, running ROUGH!

Hi, I am new here, and not a real motor head!! I have a 96 EB Bronco, that has been having problems for about a year. The problem is that this thing will stall while sitting at traffic lights, and sometimes buck a little when accelerating. I can't narrow it down...I can leave it for 20 minutes idling in park, then sit on line at a bank for a few minutes and it will run rough, and sometimes stall. Ford did a full tune up only a month ago, thinking that might be all it needed....any suggestions would be helpful...
I have also had the mass air flow sensor, o2 sensors, and fuel pump replaces after this problem started

So you are saying that it only happens while you are in drive, not while in park? Hmmm, that leads me to the transmission. First, check your transmission fluid level to make sure it's not low or overfull.

If that is okay, I would then pull the trouble codes from the computer. Since you have a '96, you will need to have someone pull them for you. I think some Autozone's will pull the codes for free.

From there, I would be checking three areas: Idle system electrical components (Throttle Position Sensor, Idle Air Bypass Control, and more); Transmission electronic components (pressure solenoids and such); and the Vehicle Speed Sensor.

I have a '94, so the OBD-II system is still new to me. Good luck and hopefully all goes well.

Thanks for the fast response. Yes, it will "skip" and chug while in park, but generally won't stall. If I give it gas...maybe to 1500 RPM, its pretty clear...I am starting to lean towards the TPS....Is it a difficult (obstructed, or requires special tool, or special tuning) part to install?

The Throttle Position sensor is located on the underside of the throttle body. You will probably have to remove, or at least loosen the throttle body assembly to get to it. Not really a big deal, but you should probably purchase a new gasket set for it, as an air leak will cause some bad running conditions. It is fairly easy to replace as far as the sensor itself goes. I would still have the codes pulled prior to replacing the sensor, as the codes can lead you directly to the problem. If the TPS is bad, it will certainly tell you.

might check the ignition module. ford had a recall on these things, somethin about the car/truck stalling.(happened to family on RxR tracks)went out on mine but in a course of just a few days(stalling, breaking up)not a year. if you do replace it do it w/ a good one from ford or napa. you can replace without removing dist. if you get the special to from auto parts store. good luck

TPS Tell me about it.

I've had mine off twice in my '96 351. You'll have to remove the throttle body unless your engine has never seen ANY elements. The Phillips head screws can be a pain to remove. Note where the wires run off the TPS. Install the new one slightly counterclockwise from home. Slowly rotate it clockwise to the proper posistion and screw it down. Hint...have a 308 or 30-06 shell casing to plug the throttle body coolant rubber hose when you remove it from the top of the body. New gasket is great idea. But before you do all that, have it tested first. It cost me $50 Canadian to find that it wasn't my hesitating problem.

Take Care

What did you find the hesitation problem to be? I am at wits end...

Here are a few things that you may want to visually check: 1)Check your vacuum lines for cracks or looseness. 2)Check your airfilter intake tubes to see if anything is restricting or blocking air flow. Simply pull out your air filter and look in the tubes with a flash light. 3)Check the exhaust pipe to see if you have heavy black soot. This could be an indication that the computer is trying to richen the mixture causing your truck to "load up" and run rough. Try to post the codes you find on your computer so we can pinpoint it and help you further. Hope this helps.

Greg, Thanks for the response...one of the troubling and annoying characteristics of this problem, is that it does not produce an error code at all...I read under another thread, its possible that the condition is not remaining long enough to produce an error, or check engine light. It does usually try to adjust itself, by surging, and sometimes the idle just drops and the engine stalls...its happenes mainly at a light, but has also happened while in park, and a few times while in the middle of a turn. I notice the bucking or hesitation when moving...as I get to higher speeds, it seems to be less of a problem.
