I bought a used 2006 F-150 XLT with 9000 miles about a month ago. When I first got it i took it for a 2 minute ride on the beach just to make sure everything was working alright (it did great even with them little tires) and havent used the 4wd again. Well today I went to take another ride to keep everything working and well I turned the **** to put it in 4H and went to the access and the truck bogged right down in the sand. Well I thought hey mabey it is just soft today soo I backed up and it was having a hard time getting out. I then looked at the rut and saw my front tires werent spinning which then I tried to switch it to 4H again and noticed the dash light was not lit and I was still in 2WD. So I drove down the rode then stopped at a parking lot and shut the truck off then turned it back on again and the 4WD still will not work (4H or 4L). I am still under warranty so I am going to give the dealership a call in the morning about getting it fixed but I did not know if anyone else has had this problem. I am thinking it is somewhere in the switch something ha gone bad but was going to get yalls thoughts on it.
Thanks
Your electric shift motor has "frozen" in place. Get underneath (if you want) and tap the motor lightly with a soft face mallet while someone turns the switch inside the cab. Willing to bet..thats the problem

alright I will try that. I have never had to mess with these electric ones. We got them in some trucks but have never had problems but got the manual shift in the other 3 F-150s which has its pluses.
every 92-96 F-150 I've had that had the electric motor has had that stupid little motor freeze up. that is your most likely culprit, although if you have installed a radio or something electrical, you might have blown a fuse.
as 96F-150 said, tap that motor. I would give it a "big" love tap compared to his recommend "little" love tap. But thats just a style difference.
I would suggest seeing if your IWEs are engaging or not...
With the engine running and the switch in 4HI, jack up one side of your front end and try and rotate the tire. If it rotates without the driveaxle spinning, you have a problem with your solenoids as well, or it may be a bad switch.
If the driveaxle spins with the tire and the driveshaft is spinning, your transfer case is not engaging. If the tire won't spin at all, then your transfer case is not engaging correctly...
Before you do anything...check the fuses! I had the same problem (I have an 06 Lariat) and there were two fuses burned out. I can't remember the fuse numbers but I can look it up if you can't locate them. The dead give away for me was that both dash lights (4x4) were out. As soon as I replaced the fuses the lights on the dash came on and 4X4 began to work properly.
Mine 4x4 dash lights will come on when your turn the key but thats it. I will go check the fuses though and see if any are blown. When I turn the switch I dont hear any kind of relays clicking or anything so im thinking it is he switch or maybe a fuse I just have not had time to take it to the dealer. Thanks
Joel......get out that hammer, Like Tylus mentioned too ....Give it a whack......Willing to bet your 4x4 will start to work again. Not exactly sure what freezes up in them, maybe the brushes in the motor...who knows. Ialways had the manual shift lever in all my trucks. I really wish they still had manual hub option as well.

Yes Sir. I will give her a good ole wack tomorrow and report back.
Thanks
If it's under warrantee why mess around. If it's indeed the motor and its bad now it would only get worse. If you take it in now and make some type of mark on the motor you will know if it's been replaced. That way if they tap it and it works for a while you will know what's going on. If it quits again before the warrantee is up they should replace it. If you tap it and it doesn't quit until near the end of warrantee you might be buying a new motor. You want to be tapping everytime you need 4x4. The old ones also would "hunt" then default to two wheel when they wore out. This isn't likely your problem because then the light would come on but go back off. Several years ago an exploder one cost almost $300. Just my $.02.
not to hijack here but ive had the opposite problem after using 4 low. its a 1/2 mile pull up hill with a load when i get to the top i end up turning the truck off and letting the truck set or cool off before i can get it out of 4 low its happend about 4 times had the truck since sept 03
when going from 4lo to 2hi, put it in neutral, shift to 4hi, wait until the light indicates 4hi, then shift to 2hi. after the light for 4x4 goes out, drive as normal.
it'll take a few seconds for the front hubs to disengage though. if you try and shift from 4lo straight to 2hi, it won't shift. at least my truck won't. I always have to do it in stages
ditto what Dumtrucka said. the last e-shift motor I bought cost $300 new. I paid $100 for a used t-case that had one attatched out of a junkyard. I then turned around and sold the junkyard the t-case back for $25. Sometimes you get lucky and the junkyard doesn't know what it has.
thanks but ive tryed that and other things as well this is not my first 4x4 ford. whats so bad about it when it happens im 38 miles from town and 2 miles back in the woods of se okla. its one of thoses things if it aint broke we cant fix it.
