I can't hear on phones, but mom and dad received a call from a guy tonight about a tailgate for my truck (an add was placed in my clubs newsletter this month).
The gentleman said he put a smooth gate on his and this is extra. I do not know the condition as of yet. I know that makes a huge difference.
Anyway, he is asking $150 for the tailgate. If it is in good shape (not rusted or dented), is that a reasonable price?
I will find out condition and all that before I purchase it obviously (mom has his cell number) but I wanted to get an idea from the members here first.
Cutting mine to size is an option, but it will take hours and hours and still not be straight.
Thank you sir. That is sort of what I thought. Until mom calls him (I can't hear on phones), I won't know the condition for sure. That will at least give me a ball park idea of what it is worth in good shape.
I assume the gentleman is in the club (the newsletter arrived here two days ago), so he should be honest about it. If it is rusted or dented (very much), it would be easier to chop mine down. Well...not easy, mine is mint (just the wrong size to fit any American truck).
Brian,
If the tailgate is in decent shape I think thats a fair price. I would have spent that much when I was messing with mine. I couldnt find a decent one close to me so I ended up building my own.
If your tailgate is a larger gate, you might want to try to sell it and use the money for one that fits your truck. The larger gate might fit the long bed and guys like me that have the F-250 could use it and they are not being reproduced that I now of. Just a thought and if it is any kind of decent shape, the long bed guys would appreciate a good gate.
Yes I know and no it is not. As far as we can tell it does not fit any American made truck. The short bed is approximately 19" X 50". The express bed is approximately 21" X 54".
Get this....mine is approximately 21" X 50". I need to slice almost 2" out of the bottom part below the letters to fit mine and it is too narrow for the longer bed. It fits neither one correctly.
I will try to get mom to call the guy. Thanks everyone.
If its in good shape thats a sweet deal. I still say the gate you have is for a 76-79 non hay style step side bed. You need to search the gallerys and find someone with a 76-79 step side and ask them to measure their gate for you, then you may just find a buyer for it too!

Hmm...Econoline pickup maybe?? (1961/66 no pickups in 1967)
C2UZ-8740700-A .. "High" Tailgate 23 1/2" x 50 3/4"
C2UZ-8740700-B .. "Low" Tailgate 19 1/2" x 50 3/4"
Just wanted to update this thread. Thanks to all who posted.
I purchased the tailgate. It is not 100% perfect, but not bad at all. It has a few dings, but no dents or anything.
The inside will take some sanding before paint. It is 51 years old now.
It is even the original red like mine. Like the rest of my truck, it will get stripped, epoxied, primed, painted some year from now.
Later,
Brian
EDIT: I guess my current gate will make a nice wall decoration...until somone finally has a truck that it fits (maybe Austraila or some other foreign place).
Pics added:
It looks rougher on the inside than it really is. It is mostly scrapes from being a truck.
That looks like a great find Brian, much better than either choice I have between my 2 trucks.
I had posted a while back about finding one at a local "junk" dealer's yard. Stopped by yesterday and bought it. It is the 21X54" tailgate for the express bed. It is in mint condition exept for minor surface rust, he found it in the rafters of an old barn.
Cool find Jeff. Those are hard to get since they are not made new. I am sure somone will trade you a good short bed one for it.
On a side note: Were all the ford tailgates red?
Sometimes I wonder the same thing, I really never liked red, but it seems to follow me.
This tailgate will probably end up on the bed off of my 79 because my nephew has claimed it for the 64 project
I didn't know there were differences in the beds and gates other than length . heck my bed is a 97 inch long one from an f250 replete with 'gate and fenders and i was gonna chop it up and shorten it to fit the new frame . if they're that hard to find i might have to go on the prowl for the little guy and save this one { that'll make the wife happy having it sit 'round here ! }
