4.2 timing adjustment

Question for a 4.2 expert (97 model).

Mine ate some coolant and sprang an oil leak around the front cover.
I decided to just pull it out and replace all the gaskets and look it over clean it up. Got it back together yesterday and drove it 200 miles today all seems good. (It does seem a little week on top end....)

My question is:
I was able to get the cam sensor and drive out and in ok, I changed the timing chain while in there and I could tell by my marks that I couldn't put it back exactly the same but close.

How would I set the timing on this.
Check with a light and turn the cam sensor?
I checked it with a light and it is running 18-20 (bouncing back and forth).
Is there something to disconnect to properly check timing?
(Last one I did was a 4.3 vortec and you had to unplug something).
What would base timing be?

Any info would be helpful.

You know, I think I read the procedure for setting the timing in the shop manual. I'll try to look it up tonight and post back. You and I are working on a similar problem (thanks for the help in the other thread!).

Got my answer from a Ford mech today.
As of 97 the cam sensor only regulates fuel and there is no "timing" to it, just install it correctly with a tool or mark it and re-install it.
