I dunno about 7-8 secs but had a old truck article saying a stock 94 or 95 Bronco did the low 9's with the 351. DId some computer and exhaust work and went 8.8 I believe. I'll see if I can dig up the article.
Found a one page article testing a stock '96 Bronco XLT with the 5.8L.Stock,with the EFI351,it turned 0-30 in 3.2 seconds,0-60 in 9.5 seconds,and covered the 1/4 mile in 17.2@81.1mph.They slightly modified the EFI351 and got these numbers:0-30 in 3 seconds,0-60 in 8.8 seconds,and 1/4 time was 16.6@84.6mph.This was done without headers&the factory rims wearing a set of 32X11.5-15 tires. I have a mildly warmed over EFI302 in my '90 Bronco.While I haven't officially timed it 0-60,it feels like 9 seconds,maybe 8.9 seconds.
Well, It might not be fast but I just picked up an '88 XLT bronco with, believe it or not a stock 300 straight 6. I didn't know they even did that for anything above a stripped bronco. Anyway, Its dog slow but I believe I'm getting over 20mpg.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jan-02 AT 02:13 PM (EST)]Getting 20 mpg with a EFI I-6 is good! My Dad had a '89 two-tone red&white Custom(I never thought they offer two-tones on base models...),with the EFI4.9L,C-6,and 3.55:1 gears. The best mpg it got was probably 15.Everybody thought it was an XLT,but it was a Custom model complete with color-keyed rubber floor matting, and a cloth&vinyl front benchseat(upgraded over base vinyl buckets). The EFI4.9L was the base engine for Customs&XLTs,until 1992 when it was dropped from the Bronco line, and the EFI5.0L V-8 became standard equipment for 1993 models.
By the way, the 300 I-6 is an excellent motor. It will outlast a 302 or 351. And it is not down on power like you think, compared to an '80s or '90's V8. I'd rather have the 6 in a Bronco than a 302, and it's debatable with a 351. The 6 is easier to work on, cheaper to tune up (2 fewer cylinders), has better torque for towing, and gets better mileage (but I agree that over 20 seems questionable). I had a 95 F-150 with the 6 and a 5 speed, and it seemed to have about the same power as my 90 XLT with a 351.
I'll agree for the 300s. I have a friend with a 300 I6 in his '77 f-350 dually. Has a 600cfm Holley carb and split headers. I drive it once in a while + it runs like a jet. It THROWS that huge truck around! yeah, and on the other hand is my poor Bronc. '90 302 gets only about 12-13 zero to 60 times. I love it to death, so that'll change soon enough when the weather gets warm.
i've got a bronco, '85, (XLT) with an I-6....supposedly it's the original, but i found paperwork saying the original had a v-8...anyhow, it surely doesn't pull like the straight six in my '77! that was a three speed in an f-100, tho. i love that motor, it is easy to work on, and quite torquey. gas mileage isn't too bad, i fill up every 200 miles, anywhere from 12-16 gallons on average i guess. (i wish the gas guage worked)
I've had the 300 in an 81 4x4 p/u - it was always under powered - I've had the 86 bronc w/ the 302 and it was just ok - I seem to remember about 20sec in the quarter mile but when I got the 96 bronc with 351 it feels like I have wings - this has done mid 17sec in the quarter mile strictly stock - Just for good measure I also have a 59 F-100 with factor 4x4 and a tranplanted 1977 351m and this moved down the quarter mile in 19sec flat not to bad for a 7200lb rock climber!
hey, i have a 460 in my bronco and im going to run 35x12.5's and im making 535HP, i have not raced it and i am never planning on it....but i just HAVE to bragg....(hey the motor cost me $6,000, i think im allowed a little bragging)
Hey BIG BRONCO BOY - grap some freind this summer and head to a drag strip - around here NH we have Wednesday night grudge races - it cost $8.00 to watch add $12.00 to race - you make as many or as few runs as you want - and you race with who ever you want of who ever pulls up next to you - when I took the 59 down 2 summers ago I can tell you I got some looks - I suppose they don't see to many 7ft tall pick-ups!!!!! LOL -
