Saw a video clip on another website that some of the trucks in 08, (and I am 90 percent sure it was a diesel from the sound,) were flame throwers. I dont mean this in a figurative tone either. The clip I saw had the truck sitting at idle for a few seconds after being ran hard, and apparently if there was a load up of fuel in the exhaust, or something, but it was shooting a STEADY flame out of the tailpipe about a foot long. Would make a great truck to haul the camper to the woods for the weekend. You wouldnt need a grill. Hotdog anyone?
Yeah you can get on the 08 forum and check out more on that, but it is correct they are flame throwers. There is a term "regeneration" were fuel is injected on the exhaust stroke, causing a flame to go down the exhaust and regenerate or clean the new high speed filter that get plugged up fast. Well some of the chips were causing to much fuel to dump in causing the flames to continue out the end of the exhaust. They ended up re flashing the computers on the recall. As a note, regeneration occurs every 200-600 miles and lasts 30 min if I recall correctly, during that time most were reporting 6-8 mpg... outstanding!!!
I guess that was a rare situation where the injectors were cracked and something wrong with the induction system. You can tell the engine isnt running very good from the sound.
I cannot believe these things are going for ~$50,000
The truck in question has a broken injector (causing the clattering) dumping excess fuel into the cylinder. The trucks problem isnt related to regeneration. You can, with the same conditions have flames from a 7.3 or a 6.0. In short, the truck in the video is sick, and a flash aint gonna help it.

I know that truck had major issues but why the recall with a reflash? or is the recall not even a reflash like everyone said it was and it was just an inspection?
The recall will adjust the amounts of fuel injected according to the amount of heat generated. There are temperature and pressure sensors in the exhaust that show the pcm when to regen and how well its working. In case of catastrophic failure (which isn't likely) it can gradually shut off the fuel completely. When the vehicle doesn't have adjustment screws any longer, you make the adjustments with a flash. The trucks affected are the ones made at the ky plant from job one to mar. 9.

According to the 08 website the reflash was suppose to keep the flames from happening in the event the injector broke, but there are conspirists out there that say it was a way to fix a problem or inspect with less collateral damage, all hearsay on my part though.
thanks vloney for the explaination. I knew there were presure sensor but didn't know about temp sensors. so prety much if the temps are too high the computer will defuel until the temps are in order. even to the point of disabling the truck. I hate the EPA!
I can't even wash my truck in the shop any more cause they made us disable the drain field on our floor drains and have to pay $.50 a gallon to pump the tanks out. then these new emissions things are crazy. hopefully the OE's will get the bugs worked out quickly.
