Talking Smoking six

I have a 1985 300. I rebuilt about 20k miles ago. I let my son borrow it for a weekend. He called me with the bad news that the emission hose from the cat to the bypass valve and the emissions bypass valve were all melted and the air cleaner was all full of oil. I removed the air filter and drove it 7 miles home. I narrowed it down and removed the cat. It had broke off a chunk inside and fell back blocking off the exhaust.
The engine isnt pumping oil into the air cleaner anymore, but is now smoking out the tailpipe pretty good. I haven't ran it very much after removing the cat been too cold and too busy. Any ideas before I start tearing it apart?

My suggestion would simply be this until you run it perhaps 10 miles or so I wouldn't be in a hurry to open it up. The oil that went thru the upper end may hang around for a while until it is burned off, also you may have a good bit of fuel in the oil which will let it pass thru the rings. Smell the dip stick and you will know.

i'd have to agree, you threw a lot of soot and oil into that engine, and a lot of extra fuel. smell the oil, you most likely need an oil change after all of that. start with that, and make sure and clean out the lines running to the air cleaner, if they still have oil in them, it'll all happen over again.

don't diss that method of fixing it, i've found the 300 to be stubborn, and will sometimes survive despite my best attempts at murder, sometimes running better after stupid moves just like that one....just to spite me

300s aren't spiteful, it's just that they keep running. (Even when I'm the one with smoke coming out my ears)
