A friend of mine has a '03 F350 CC 7.3 auto, 4x4, leveling kit, over sized tires. He is looking for a affordable chip or tuner to increase his mileage. The truck is stock. What are his best options??
me too, another thread stated that a DP chip would increase mileage on the 80 economy setting. Can anyone with this chip say what their increase has been?

thanks, Vince
I don't know how much extra a chip will help mileage. I do know that a tire larger than stock size will hinder fuel usage. I was planning to go with a larger tire myself, but with the price of fuel these days it's will be more economical to stay stock. I have the DP Tuner chip, and use 80 econo all the time. The performance gains are stuff of legend, but I've seen no real mileage improvement. Having said that, I find it amazing that I can get 18-21 MPG with a truck that weigh's 7700 lbs!
I'm testing a DPTuner right now in my 01. Only one fill so far and No Fuel Mileage gains to speak of yet!! I will fill up in the morning and at that time the tuner will have over 800 miles for the first part of the test, just by the Fuel Gauge it looks like normal Fuel useage so far. I will post up when I fill up!! Normal Fuel mileage for mine is 14.4 MPG!!
Filled up this morning, Miles Driven 506.1, Gallons used 34.390 Fuel mileage 14.716!! Fuel mileage sense installing DP Tuner 847.6 miles Driven, Gallons used 57.595 Fuel mileage is 14.716. Slightly better then the Hypertech but about 1.5 less then stock. I think the Slightly better mileage then the Hypertech is because I'm babying it. I used to drive the truck all out when possible, the DP Tuner has lot more lower end performance so if you leave the lights WOT it will spin the tires and create lots of smoke!! The tranny shifts funny also!!
If that fuel mileage holds up it will take 2 years to pay for the DP Tuner, looks like it's going back!!
Next tank 558.3 Miles on38.0654 Gallons, that comes to 14.666 MPG on that tank. Total Miles last 7 days 1,405.9 Miles on 95.66 Gallons. Average of 14.696 MPG all on Position 2 DP Tuner. Going to try stock position for a week!!
Filled up again this morining, Mostly on stock (CAN'T, CONTROL, THE, URGE,) I did some playing and some Hwy. on second position. 424.4 miles on 28.226 Gallons = 15.035 MPG. So far it look like Stock is the best for Fuel mileage!!
10 MPH over everywhere. 75 in 65 Ect. My Average Miles per Engine Hour in my 06 is running 50.155. I think I average about the same in the 01. The best the truck has ever got was 17.5 and that was bone cold stock. I'm testing the DP tuner because a lot of people claim it improved their Fuel mileage. I don't think it can so far i've been proven right. You can't add more fuel and get better fuel mileage. I calculate fuel mileage the old fashioned way Number of miles Divided by the gallon put in tank. I don't care what any trucks display shows. I don't think 14-17 is bad, I think it's normal.
thanks, was curious about this whole thing because have a co-worker who has a Cummins in his Dodge with an edge chip that increased his mileage to about 27, and I here other Excursion drivers saying they get around 20. My mileage and driving seems to be pretty close to yours.
I know some people CLAIM 27 MPG after adding a Chip/Programmer. I normally put them on my Ignore list because I know they can't actually figure there Fuel mileage and they are looking at the trucks Display. To Me it means they couldn't possibly have anything worth wild to say!!
Case in Point Just posted::--"I have an early 99 running stock tires..stock turbo and a 15* HPOP..I live in the white mountains of new Hampshire where the longest flat is a 1 mile stretch if you are lucky..last summer with a stock truck I got 17 to 18 around town .and 21 to 22 on the big road..did my mods in octobor.with winter blend and cold morning and after work 15 minute warm ups I'm still getting 17 around town in my 80 econo...went to Florida for Christmas and got 23 in my 60 tow CC on 72 MPH..it may not improve for you in the flat lands..but for me where ever I go its up hill and I get better MPG cause my truck never down shifts any more..""
This guy claims he lets it Idle for 15 Minutes and it still gets 23 MPG!!

you might want to re read that..it said 23 on the big road going to Florida..I get 17 around town....no wonder you are so confused..
I should also add I used a friends bed cover for the trip..I'm sure that helped with MPG as well..

My truck description is in my sig, and all my mods are also listed there.
In filling up, I always fill up to the brim so I can see the fuel level in the fill-pipe, and I NEVER rely on the pump shut-off mechanism to tell me tha tank is full (I can generally get 5-6 more gallons in ym tank by slowly topping off).
I always use the same fuel station.
I always use the same pump.
I always pull into the fill-up position from the same direction.
I always hand-calculate my mpg (don't have a lie-o-meter).
Earlier this week, on a 250 mile road trip, all highway, I got 19.5 mpg crusing at 70 the whole time.
The next several days, in town only, stop and go, short trips to work and back, hilly terrain, I got 14.5 mpg.
Yesterday, another road trip, very hilly country roads with some stop-n-go, had to "tromp the pedal" three times to get past farm vehicles, some highway, I got almost 16 mpg.
Overall average for the past 4 months is nearly 15 mpg.
