Ok,so I need to vent, so bear with me.
My son asks me to buy him some pc games and install them on this darned contraption (that I have the intermost desire to hit with a hammer). .So,I go out and spend a gazillion dollars, bring them home, and try to install them.First I get a message that says,YOU do not have directX version bla, bla, bla.so I think,ok no problem,I can get it updated. Then I have to do some other junk with online internet game sharing mumbo jumbo. Then I finally get to where I can install the but it freezes up after about two minutes! So,I figure ok,the heck with this one, lets try the next one.It wont install either. So,now I get .Then I realize that two of the games I just bought are in a dvd format and I dont have a dvd reader! So,my mistake there. So,I go back to the ones that are cd format and finally get Sid Meirs Railroads to install. This is after I spend $200 for a Video card and another memory card for this computer. Then when I hit play game,it says, your computer is not good enough to play our pos game! So,I try Starwars Empire at war,and it freezes!Ok,Im done ranting.Anybody know of a good site to go to that I might get help from?
your computer i guess is a bit old or if its new, its just an xl model.
i had the same problem with my computer when i tried to play civ4. my computer is to slow, i got it where i could play it on a low graphic option, but i will wait and buy a new comp later that will handle it.
you can make it easier and buy a whole new computer! with everything!
Well,by todays standards it probably is old.It is a three year old Dell desktop. But according to what it says on most of the boxes these games came in,it is supposed to work.
did you buy the right video card for it? i am guessing they require some superduty graphics card with 3d accelorator on it and everything, and like 1 gig of memory at least.
You definately have to meet the requirements on the game box, such as processor speed/type, RAM, Video Card, Hard drive space. Also, make sure its compatible with your operating system. If you upgraded with Vista, big mistake right now. Many games are incompatible with Vista right now until Microsoft gets all the updates installed to be compatible. Also, there could be some updates going on in windows xp that could be messing with your system and gaming. My suggestion is too uninstall all your games (if you got them installed), uninstall your video card, uninstall direct X, and then reinstall everything. I had some trouble playing Call of Duty 2 for awhile and my buddy did also with the same game. Also, if trying to play multiplayer and it freezes, your firewall or internet security program may be interfering with that. Make sure the games are ALLOWED to connect to the internet.
I have removed and reinserted these games so much,I feel like I should have a cigarette! And I already had 512mb of ram and went out and bought another 512mb so I am over the one gig.The video card is a GeForce MX4000,and is supposed to give me unimaginable results! They are unimaginable alright.I never imagined I would be out $500 for some stupid hardware and a bunch of games that are collecting dust!Oh yeah,Call of duty is one of the games,So is Sid Meirs Pirates, and Sid Meirs Railroads,Star Wars Empire at war,Dungeon Lords.Ill stop now,as I type,I see money flying out the window!
One thing I have found is that if I turn off my computer and restart after every stage of installing software/hardware it seems to go way smoother. Example: install game, reboot, update game, reboot. Also many if not most games don't seem to work properly right out of the box until you update them.
The other thing that I did and I would suggest is to Reformat your Hard drive and reinstall windows. Remember to back up your important stuff. After I re installed windows, my games seemed to work fine. Maybe try that, because once you start installing and reinstalling and downloading things to try to make your games work, it seems windows get corrupted or something. Start from scratch. Takes forever to do, but may be well worth it. Have you done that since you owned your computer?
Yup,I have defragged, defogged, deepfried, dipped in dog doo, etc.I even had a Dell guru go through all the steps of deleting and reinstalling everything he could.he was stumped too,and said I should get with the game manufacturers.Yeah right, try going to the Sid Meirs Railroads site. Its useless for tech assistance.Hmm,That game of solitaire is sounding tempting Mil1ion.But with my luck there would be 51 cards in the deck, and I wouldnt know it until after I installed it and tried to run the program!
That is not a game video card with only 64MB of memory on it. It is good for surfing the net, FTE, etc. I am not sure that a new video card is worth the $$ on your computer. If you post your computer specs there are a few other computer guys on FTE that will give you some good advice (it may not be what you want to hear though ).

If you're missing a card or two, use one of the card slots and install the missing ones.
I would stop, find a pro and let them do it. PC games are the hardest software to run on your PC, they eat up all of the PC's resources, and if everything isn't precisely set right, you'll be fighting freeze-ups, blue screens of death, and wasting ur time.
Try Majorgeeks.com..there are a couple of forums there that recommend tweaks for gamers and modders.
