:-( help .. i have a 1990 bronco and im haveing aproblem with my 4wheel drive i have the push a button and you are in 4wheel drive not the locking hubbs and i was just wondering if there is a manual way to disingage the front drive sahft so i can get back on the road if someone can please help me thanks.... mike
How does that work with reverse and 4WD anyway? I have a '90 with manual hubs and case. I noticed the other day in the snow that if I had the hubs locked and put it into 4WD, that sometimes it would stay in 4WD after I shifted the case back to 2WD. I could get it to go back to 2WD though, it wasn't stuck, I just had to drive a bit and try again. But what is the rule exactly about going in reverse after you unlock the hubs or something? What if you unlock the hubs and don't go in reverse right after?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jan-02 AT 08:55 PM (EST)]yeah i cant get out of 4wheel drive im stuck and i did go in reverse with it for a while and cant get the front drive to disengage please help???????
That's actually about all I know. I have an '83 with manual hubs and t-case. I've fixed just about everything on my truck except the front end...I basically became a mechanic out of necessity.
To disengage the hubs, you have to reverse your direction from which you were last travelingin 4WD, which is not necessarily driving in the reverse direction. The hubs will remain locked until you reverse the direction to unlock them, or power is constantly applied to the front driveshaft.
If your truck is not disengaging from 4WD, it could be the electronic motors on the transfer case that are having trouble. They do tend to wear out after time and aging. Also, check your fluid level in the transfer case. If it is low, there may be some slight binding that is preventing the motors from disengaging the 4WD.
Have you ever changed the transfer case fluid? That may also help some.
