New York State DOT question

I recently heard that an F350 pulling a comercial trailer in New York needs a Department of Transportation (DOT) sticker or else heavy fines would be imposed. I'm not sure what this means and any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John

You heard right. Go to the US DOT website and register, it's free and will keep you away from heavy fines.

technically, any commercial vehicle now, over 10,000 lbs gvw, intrastate or interstate needs DOT numbers. it'll get stricter soon. they don't bother me with my crewcab because other than the tracrac, it looks like a personal truck. not a commercial truck.
if i start pulling a closed in trailer like i might get. then ill get dot stickers. they are free to get. they have a link. i'll find it and post it tomorrow or monday

that's not just for NY it's a federal thing.

The main thing where New York is different is with the IFTA stickers. It's 26,000 lbs most other places, but it's 18,000 in New York.

Wow! I suppose the newer pickups are in fact over 10,000 GVW. My 2004 scoots in just under at 9,900 GVW.

You are partically correct. The law states gvw or gcwr rating. So you are towing a trailer and have a gross weight with trailer of 12K and in the trailer you have lumber you are taking to a job site. You had better have the dot # on truck. They can be a magnetic sign I have found out.

Hey, toolman! Are you saying that an F-350 with an enclosed trailer is a problem in NY? I looked at the DOT site and it seemed to address only commercial carriers. Do you know the link and are you sure it's free? Thanks for your time...

I just registered, and indeed it was free. They do need a credit card number as a form of electronic signature. The site is US DOT.

Any vehical with a GVRW over 10,000 lbs registerd to a business in NYS must have a DOT number. This does not apply to privately owned vehicals no matter what you tow.

Thanks, toolman. You answered my question with the business part. I'm a private vehicle going to car shows and the like. I always drive by checkpoints and never had a problem. Only exception to that is the Florida ag stations, they're tough.

Thanks for that, sbowling. Every time I go by there I have an enclosed trailer or my cube van so I play it safe. Just a quick 'hello' on the way in but they make me open everything up on the way out.

Yes in NY if your gcvw or gvw is 10,000lbs or more you will need dot numbers. Their are a few execeptions though:
1) RV's with trailers
2) If vehicle or, vehicle and trailer in registered in only your name
3) If you do not transport for commerce.

I registered and made magnet signs for my truck just so I would not have to deal with the B.S. if I ever got stopped because I tow my trialers, and for different organizations that I am a member of. I dont think that they are really monitoring it though. I know that alot of the landscapers are complaining around me that they are required to have them. Just another hoop our goverment makes us jump through, and to make it easier to track our movements if they wish!
