It bleeds off the boost pressure before the map sensor sees it.
http://www.puredieselpower.com/catalog/ford-powerstroke-map-dual-boost-relief-valve-p-89.html

I'm not sold on this idea because it is tricking the PCM into thinking the boost is lower than it actually is. The PCM has a fuel map preprogrammed into it. ie. IF the boost is 20 psi it delivers a certain amount of fuel. This is a simplified answer, hopefully it makes sense. If the boost is actually higher than the MAP sensor sees then fuel/air ratio has been changed (lean). This would be especially true at the higher RPM levels.

This mod also raises the 'de-fuel' boost #. Most of our truck defuel around 24 psi. You may be able to get 30 psi or higher. The higher you set it the more risk that you will get compressor stall (not a good thing).

The best way to get more power is to get a chip. A chip allows the defuel #'s to be raised and fuel map is correct for the higher boost numbers IMHO.

lol, maybe your gettin old or something Tim Hey thanks for the input CudaJimbo! I already have a Dp tuner with Mr.Wildman tuning. I just thought the map sensor mod allowed more boost to be created.

OBS trucks don't defuel so unless you can add more fuel you won't get more boost.

steve maybe your right I might be getting old, turning 28 this year!

Maybe i need to step up to a set of Stage 2's from Beans then. Im tryin to hit 36psi-39psi in the truck with the new turbo so thats why i was askin. I thought I remembered someone sayin awhile back that the manifold will only see so many boost numbers and then it de-fuels the motor to not exceed a certain lbs of boost. I figured this might prohibt me from seeing my desired #'s of boost.

Timbob I hear ya brother, I just hit the big 21 last month. Im an antique and your older then dirt. sounds like we got all the bases covered, lol!

the superduties defuel but the OBS trucks don't seem to. I hit 33 everyday with not issues. superduties defuel at 24 psi

I could grab 32lbs with the stock unit but i can only grab about 29lbs with the new unit, which leads me to believe if i throw more fuel at it i will see more boost as well as jam more air into the motor.

Cowboy Steve

P.S.- you have the stock turbo on your rig still?

you are making more power with less boost because the D66 flows more volume at less pressure.

yes I am still running the stock turbo. well not the factory unit after I thrashed it 2 months ago but stock rebuilt. we'll see how long this one lasts!

I know it flows more air with less boost and creats more power but im positive that i can squeeze some more boost outta it with some more fuel. Could be wrong but before i do more fuel I need to update HPOP and put on an intercooler. Time will tell. Post some pics of your truck so I can peep that 6" stack set-up! Do you like it vs. stock exit exhaust? lot of in-cab echoing?

Steve I am sure you can get more boost out of it. no doubt about it. stage 2's will do it! You can see pics of my truck in the link of my sig. not too many of my 97 yet. too busy to get too much done to it. I have a pile of parts to install yet include some new stacks. Goning to 5 inch turn outs and using on the the 6"mitre cuts for a side exit tip for when I need to run my topper.

Compared to the stock exit its much louder in the cab. also compared to before the rear tire exit I had on my 95 it louder. but my dad says he thinks just standing outside of the truck as I go by the stacks are quieter. probably cause the sound is being projected up rather than out. we'll see what happens when I get the turn outs done which won't be a for while since I am doing the IC first.

hey speaking of IC's what kind of EGT drops did you see when you installed your D66?

combo of the D66, tymar, and new diamond eye 5" straight pipe exhaust i saw a drop in a total of 400 degrees. I know the intake alone dropped it 100 and the turbo and new exhaust really kicked the EGT's in the butt dropping it another 300! I'm really happy with it but I'm gonna need to do an IC and the updated oil pump before i got bigger injects. I think I'm gonna do my IC first tho. Are you gonna use original ford coolers or aftermarket?

400 degree's is a good drop!

for my IC I am using 7.3 superduty cooler modding my own pipes. I am too cheap to get an aftermarket cooler. I am hoping in the next 3 week to have the cooler in. I have had it for 3 months!

Im gonna use a ford cooler on my unit to, they are just as effective as the aftermarket ones in my opinion. Does your cooler have the plastic end caps on it?
