service engine light

I have a 96 f250 with a 7.3 diesel . All of the sudden just going down the road the service engine light came on and the engine done everything but stop running! Didnt smoke but the ole engine sounded real bad! If you let off the fuel the lite goes off but give it fuel again and the lite comes on and wont hardly run! The crazy thing is it wont do it every time, it just started today and it has happened 3 or 4 times today. Anybody have places or things to check or any ideas , they will be greatly apreciated! Thanks divedigger

First thing I would do is check the fuel filter, drain off any water, and check the fuel pressure at the schrader vavle on the FPR. How long since and oil and filter change? If all of this checked out I would change the CPS.

Do the checks above, I'm thinking your TPS is playing a role in the problem but never heard of one making the engine run bad. Also you should not reallly accelerate worth a .............
