I have question regarding the locking hubs on my 77 150. I broke a wheel stud the other day, and I plan on replacing it tonight with the help of my father in law. Well, last night I took things apart to see if i could get at the studs and replace them myself. Well, I got deep in to the four wheel drive components and decided I was in over my head. I put everything back together as best I could, but I couldn't get the Free/lock switch to line up and perform like it should. dorky move.
My questions, is my pasanger side hub most likely locked or free at this time? How can I tell? Would I do damage driving 20 miles out to my dads shop if it were locked in?
I drove it to work today, and all feels same as usual and smooth.
Sorry, I don't know which dana axle I have. I check up on that, if you need that information.
You will not damage anything if you drive with the front end locked.
Not sure how the front lockout copuld have gotten messed up. It removes with a few fasteners, and is a complete unit. All moving parts are contained within the unit itself, so getting it mixed up is difficult to do. Maybe some dirt got in there, and the lockout is just being stubborn. Since you have a 77 with a D44 front axle, and you can turn the stub axle from the backside of the knuckle. This tell you whether or not the hub is locked or not.
Thanks, for you quick reply. Copy, I have a D44, and I won't do damage by driving it to the expert.
I would like to understand better what you said about checking to see if the hub is locked or not manually. Sorry, I didn't follow by your explanation above.
Look behind the tire and see the U-joint thats inside the axle. If your transfer case is in neutral and the lockout is in the free position you should be able to turn the U-joint and axle shaft by hand or use a long screw driver to push and rotate it. If it doesnt move then the lockout is locked.
You could have put the spring on the wrong side of the hub fuse or something like that. You can spin the rotor. ifcheck by lifting up the truck, jamb a screwdriver through the axle u-joint (through the knuckle) and try to locked, it won't spin.
I just took an early lunch and ran out to poke around on it. once I was able to check and see if I was locked in or not it was easier to put thing back together. basically, you don't have to take the middle screw holing the spring assembly together out, and I did and that was what confused me. So thank to all, I am all back together and not locked in.
