I am getting ready to change the transmission fluid on my F250 4x4 with a c6 and I wanna drain the torque converter. I was told to rotate the flywheel clockwise so access the tc drain plug. Is that clockwise when standing in front faceing the truck or when standing in the rear of the truck? Also I am also going to install a drain plug kit in the transmission pan to ease in fluid changes. Is there a right or wrong place in the pan to install the plug. I thought I read somewhere about a drain plug causing transmission problems due to being installed in the wrong place.
You don't want to turn these engines backwards so the easiest way to figure out which way to rotate it is to look at the fan and turn the engine over so the fan is going the right way to pull air through the radiator. This is the normal rotation. As for the plug I drilled and welded a bung to the back right side of the pan on the side. (See Red Dot) If I remember right it's just to the right of the tranny mount where the pan curves in.
I brazed the drain to the bottom of the pan some 10 years ago, and also bolted external fluid filter to the frame, by the radiator. Both were made by B&M. No problems so far...
I forgot to check the engine rotation before I startin draining the transmission. I have already drained the pan, but not the tc yet. It appears that the engine rotates clockwise if you are standing in front of the truck faceing the cab, is that correct? Also when I removed the old filter it had a metal gasket. I reused the metal gasket instead of the cheap paper gasket. Is it ok to reuse the metal one? Lastly, is it normal to have some metal shavings on the pan magnetic?
My 86 does have a drain, but it is on the face of the TC, instead of the outer perimeter, like the E4OD. It can be a pain to find, since you have to look through a hole in the flexplate to spot it. Most of the fluid is in the TC, so it is worth draining it as well.
The replacement filter I got for my C6 was the same type as I pulled, which was a metal screen. I did not know paper filters were avalable for the C6, but if you want, I see no problem with reusing the original filter if it is clean, and in good condition. I have no idea how well the paper filter will work.
Engine rotation can be revealed by checking the direction of the fan, the correct rotation will have the fan pulling air through the rad to the engine.
As for metal shavings, you don't want to see too much, but the short answer would be yes, in most cases there is usually some filings on the pan magnet (thats why its there).
