I've got a '94 F-350 7.3L Factory Turbo Crew Cab Duallie. It has 86,000 on it. It's seems to be all original. I have had to replace the injector seals and glow plugs. My problem is that it smokes. On the highway at 60mph if I give it 3/4 throttle it smokes black, even when rolling down South Grand here in St.Louis at 30mph, if I bring it up off idle it will produce a puff of black smoke.
As I see it black smoke is a waste of fuel($$$) I would like to keep up the power but would also like to get some kind of better fuel mileage. I get roughly 13mpg if I stay under 60mph and anything over the best I can get is 10mpg. i think this truck has low gears also.
I have ran into the previous owners son and he said his dad turned up the injection pump(to hang with his friends with powerstrokes) and then promptly blew the tranny out. The son said his dad never turned the pump back down though. His dad just spent over $5000 to rebuild the tranny to handle the engine.
Anyone here in Saint Louis know of a good diesel mechanic to set my pump?
Well, I can only find one poor quality pic for you. In this pix, it's #2.
What I would do is, loosen the set screw, turn the adjustment screw gently till it bottoms, then back out 3/4 turn, reset the locknut. Then drive, and tune accordingly.
Hello Rocketattack.........give a read to "using the glow plugs to tune the engine" thread..........I would recommend using a "injector cleaner" but at 5 times the usual amount and then to change the fuel filter before making major changes............
The only reason I recomend turning down the screw, is because he states:
"I have ran into the previous owners son and he said his dad turned up the injection pump(to hang with his friends with powerstrokes) and then promptly blew the tranny out."
If the PO turned the screw out, it should be returned to the proper setting. Then things can be tuned from there.
Turning the screw out really doesn't improve power. I don't know the Stanadyne name for it, but it controls low speed fuel timing, before the mechanical advance comes into play. Turning it out just dumps more fuel, earlier. Causing smoke at low/mid rpms. Before the boost is up, and the engine can burn it all.
I have a new air filter and a new fuel filter on it. I also have been running Power Service grey bottle and white bottle at higher doses. From what I understand I need to do this; http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/I...%20article.htm I wasn't told exactly what the PO turned up, if it was what fonefiddy is saying to adjust or what this web page is saying.
Check the external screw visually. If you see more than a just a few threads above the locknut its been backed out. You probably need to turn the internal screw back some. No telling how much its been turned up. I'd just adjust it back down a flat at a time til you're happy, but if you want to have a shop do it there is a Taylor Diesel in St. Peters. Poke here. I have done business with their shop here. They're good folks.

I know this thread is old but I finally got around to adjusting the IP. I turned it up one flat and it blew heavy black smoke when going up a short hills. I then turned it down 2 1/2 flats. Now it has no power at all. It can not pull my boat, which is about 6,000lbs w/ trailer, up hills like it use to before I played with the IP. I am adjusting it back up 1 1/2 turns as i am writing this.
FoneFiddy stated there is an adjustment on the back of the pump. I don't see any adjustment screw. I do see a plastic cap. Is it under this cap?
