Need help - Transmission problem

The transmission died in my wife's 2002 Escape XLT 4wd a three weeks ago. I had it replaced by the local Ford garage ($3400 later) and now it won't stay in gear. They told me it would be fixed in 3-4 days and it took them a week and a half.

Now the gear shift selector on the column pops out of gear if you brush it trying to turn on the radio. This scares my wife to death. If I pull it into Drive and then push it towards the dash it seems to lock in place.

I took it back to the garage and they called me today and said they were going to have to drop the steering column and replace a part with a detent on it for another $342. They claim it has nothing to do with the transmission.

When I politely questioned this, he said that he would talk with the technician again, in the morning, and see if there was anyway it was related to the tranmission. He's supposed to call me back first thing in the morning.

I didn't have this problem when I took it in. I think it is related to what they did. Can you all help me with any advice so I can talk with him tomorrow? Am I off base on this one?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Tim
