I happened upon this great site the other day and signed up immediately .
I am a mechanic for a construction company with 2 '97 PSD's, both with the E4OD. From what they have told me 1 of the trucks has had 3 replacement tranny's, and the other 1 I am in the middle of diagnosing its second replacement. This one lost reverse, and makes and awful grinding noise in forward. Before I decide to remove and rebuild this unit, I have been reading in here about others "BEEFING" up this trans. I would like to know more about what's needed. Draining the oil, I found exceptionally clean oil, no debris in the pan, and without cutting the filter apart, it is clean as well. The boss claims he can get a "NEW" unit from the dealership for $1200.(good friend with parts manager). Any input would be greatly appreciated
I have recently purchased a '91 F350 5.8 with a E4OD. That had the trans swapped out for an newer model E4OD. The speedo doesn't work on mine.Mine takes a speedo gear and the current trans is controlled by speed senor in rear end. I got a quote of 1600. for an rebuilted unit that has been updated. So getting a unit for 1200. could be a deal.
If you want to upgrade an E4OD, almost every moving part in the transmission can be replaced with upgraded ones. One of the leading causes of failure in this type of tranny is heat. The E4OD is designed to allow for a controlled slip as it shifts to the next gear, this makes the transmission very smooth, but unless you're cruising empty on the highway, theres going to be a lot of heat buildup from it. A big flat stacked cooler is one of the best invesments you can make to prevent this. Stock torque converters are also known for tearing themselves apart, and usually the shrapnel gets pumped through the rest of the trans causing all sorts of trouble.
$1200 is the going rate right now for a rebuilt E4OD, I've seen some on Ebay for $1000. Any transmission at that price will likely be a stock one, and as such, will not last any longer than the other ones.
I'm not sure how hard these trucks are being worked, but I'm guessing there not exactly being babied. If you want to make an E4 bullet proof, its not hard, but it will cost at least as much as a the ford replacement, and thats before labour.
