timing pointer location

Oh, the shiny spot on the timing cover is the spot that doesn't get painted when the engine is painted quickly and sloppily with the balancer still in place... It is bare steel. When installed, the dampner was not rubbing / touching the timing cover.

I did a little checking over the weekend. I bolted both timing pointers on the engine, turned the engine over until #1 piston was about at TDC, and re-installed the balancer. The balancer and drivers side pointer were lined within a few degrees of TDC. I turned the crank a few degrees until it was at TDC and painted a mark on the balancer at the passengers side pointer. I've got a timing light with the adjustable advance built in, so I'll use that, the passengers side timing pointer, and my painted mark to set the timing once I get the engine going.
