Ok fellas, this is the question. I am looking for a truck that will be capable and reliable to pull 15k around. I am going to pull a 24' gn flatbed trailer with about 12k loaded on it. big skid steer, tree saw, grapple bucket, tracks. I am curious if there was a certain set of years after the powerstroke was introduced to stay away from for this type of pulling. I am wanting the most reliable rig I can get. I have my eyes on a '96 f250. I am looking for a reg. cab long bed truck. And no one can convince me to go to a 6.0 I have friends that work in the service dept. at a ford dealer and I will not purchase a 6.0. Any help with this issue would be great before I make a mistake. Thank you gentlemen.
thanks jowilker, I am not against a 350 or 250, I am buying used and looking for the best buy. If I have to have a 350 to handle the load then that is what I will look for, I have found several of both models and am just looking for what will handle the load safely and also bang for the buck. I am curious as to what year intercoolers started being factory installed? I found a 2002 f350 srw truck also. Where I am buying used I cannot be too picky about what I find as miles away from home is also an issue. Any input on what will handle the load safely and have the best power in stock trim is appreciated. Thank you
If you will not even consider a 6.0, that leaves you with the 7.3. Go with the newest / least milage one you can find. I also suggest the 350 vice 250. I'd also go with a dually if you can find one.
In reality, I think you are missing out by not considering the 6.0, esp. the 05's and newer, but sounds like your mind is made up....
I don't know that even an F-350 is going to be enough truck for you. If you're talking about hauling around 15k on a regular basis (it sounds like you are) then I would consider an F-450 with a powerstroke.
After '05, the 6.0 is a very reliable engine. I wouldn't get a 7.3 earlier than 99 either. The intercooled PSDs make more power, and I think you will need it.
Another reason to go with the later-year 7.3 is the transmission. If you're looking at a manual, then the 6-speed is superior to the 5. Of coure if you're thinking auto, then that doesn't apply.
