I would go with the tranny filter change. C6's are easy, as stated, you take the pan off, so it's messy, but not hard. The filter is held on with bolts, so it isn't too bad to deal with. The ones that are a pain are the push in style. The rear pan bolts may be tricky to get to, loosen the trans mount bolts and jack up the trans, then they are easy. It doesn't sound serious, could just be some gunk holding the shift valves, modulator valve, or the governor valve. You also will know more when you pull the pan. The color of the oil and the amount of sediment on the bottom of the pan tell a lot. Sediment is normal, chunks are not. If it is so thick it looks like mud, that is bad though.
Have you checked how much vacuum you have? Because if the shifting is weird and the brakes are funny too, sounds like a bad vacuum pump to me... should be about 20 inches of vacuum and climb there fairly fast. If it doesn't, then there might be a leak somewhere or a bad pump. Hope it helps
As far as the brakes go, they have a mind of their own. Most of the time I have to push the pedal in about 3-4 inches for it to start stopping the truck. It stops fine, it's just I feel that I shouldn't have to push in the brake pedal that far to get some stopping power. Anyways, when it does have a mind of its own, the pedal will become stiff and I don't have to really push much on it to get any stopping power, but this seldomly happens. I'm not saying it happens rarely, and it doesn't happen often, it's kind of in between.
If I were you I would jack up the back of the truck and check the brakes. There should be a little bit of drag from drum to shoes. You can hear the contact of the shoes on the drum but there is very little drag. Use a brake spoon or a screwdriver to adjust the brakes through the slot until there is a little bit of drag. You will notice a big difference at the pedal and it will stop nice and straight as long as the fronts are working good.
Ok well everybody's saying all these different things, I just wanna try and narrow it down a bit. Some say its the vacuum, some say its not, some say its the filter and it goes on and on? So what do you think I should do? Change the filter, test the vacuum and change the fluid?
The tranny shifts late, but it doesnt shift hard....so I dunno what to think. What happens if i were to drain the tranny fluid and it comes out muddy lookin? What do you suppose that could mean? I dunno this whole thing is messed and i dunno what to think :s.
