Broken Glow Plug, Help

When I was removing the glow plugs on the drivers side of my 97 F250, the plug at the rear of the engine broke. The exterior shaft broke off and now the plug rod is stuck in place. I have tried numerous things to pull it out with no luck. Any ideas?

Just a friendly suggestion, you will probably get better help if you check out the diesel forums! There is tons of good info there, this section is mainly for half tons, with gassers

well its not a good thing that you already know! I had that happen on a customers truck one time and the customer elected to just leave it in there. Its pretty much that or pull the head to get it out. Maybe somebody else has a good tip but if you can't get anything one it to turn, which if it broke really won't matter cause its really stuck, you have no option other than to drill it out and hope you can save it.

Whoa, first off before you do anything, is there anything of the broken piece protrouding above the cylinder head?

If there is, there's hope. You need to give it a soak of seafoam, pb blaster, or some thing similar, not much just enough to fill the depression in the cylinder head around where the glowplug seats. Do this once or twice a day for a few days, but at the same time try to get a set of needlenose visegrips to grip the outside piece in case it frees up and sinks in.

After a few days, try twisting with the vise grips, and even at that point try tapping down, not too much, but it may help in breaking the carbon loose, and allow the piece to pull out.

Other's have had good luck after the chemical soak by rethreading the glow plug body back in, and then trying to remove it again. Some have been able to turnout the broken piece with the body after the carbon has been dissolved.

Big thing here is not too rush the job. Keep us posted on the progress, and others will be along soon enough to help.

redrocket076,

One other thing, there's also a slide hammer type of tool used in conjunction with the visegrips that may help too. Some have found them at harborfreight, i've seen them on ebay, but i imagine if you're handy a simple copy could be made up too.

Here's a large sized one on ebay to give you an idea of the concept.
