i have a 92 f150 XLT regular cab, short bed, with a 302 and E4od. what would it take to make a stick shift work behind that 302?

What would it take? I would say a doner rig that has the tranny set up you want, alot of work and time, a nice big garage to work in and a good set of tools and equipment work with.

if you wanna change out everything including the steering column and the bottom piece in the instrument cluster (where the numbers and letters are) and to have the correct cross member, drive shafts, etc. and for everything to go smooth and work out easy as possible a donor truck would be your best bet but finding one at a good deal might be a problem at least they are in my area

Donor truck would be the best option. You could always go to the junkyard, if you live by a good one, and just get parts as you need them too! I dont think it would be that hard, just put in the pedals, and cut the cutout in the floor, and a few other things and youd be good to go!

Flywheel, clutch, manual transmission, crossmember, and probably a different driveshaft but your tape measure will tell you if that's required or not. You'll also need the master cylinder, line, and slave (or hydraulic throwout bearing) depending on what is supposed to be with the manual trransmission.

Oh, and the pedal.

The 92 F-series has the shorty column, so taking it out, removing four torx screws, and the gear shift lever comes right off. If you don't want to hole in the plastic shell for the gear shift after the fact, replace it with one from a junkyard. Full size fords of the same vintage range use this column so getting the plastic bits is easy in a variety of colors.

If your truck did NOT have an E40D then you can use your current EEC (efi computer) because it didn't manage the transmission shift points or the torque converter so you won't get any codes.

If it does have an E40D, it will still work fine and the check engine light will not light up, but if you need to download codes to diagnose something, you'll have to download about 6-8 transmission codes first before you get to the codes that you want.

Other than that, it's a straight forward swap. For the competent DIY guy it's a full day. 8 hrs or so assuming you have all the parts sitting next to your truck when you start.

Is the 5spd behind the 300, 302, and 351 the same?

Yes, the bellhousing is the same. You will have your choice of Mazda or ZF 5-speed. Here is a pic of everything that is required, this is for a Bronco, so some 4x4 bits are included:

Don't forget that automatic and manual starters are different. The automatic starter may bind on your mt flywheel.

The mazda is a light duty transmission, and the ZF is a heavy duty transmission.

They both mate to the 300/302/351 (SBF) bell but choose accordingly.

The ZF trans is the one in the picture jas88 posted above. Note that it has a diagonal cross-hatch pattern. A Mazda has a horizontal/vertical cross-hatch. Not so apparent in the picture, the ZF also has pto covers on both the driver's and passenger's sides while the Mazda does not. There is also a large tag centered on the driver's side that will say ZF on it.

A ZF tranny is not as common as the Mazda and will be a bit more difficult to find or at least more expensive. A good way to get everything you need is to find a donor truck with one. Look for '88-'96 F-250 or larger trucks with a motor from the same engine group as you have. I found mine in a local salvage yard for $600 + $50 core. Try car-part.com for salvage yards in your area that may have one. Ebay always has some listed but many are by rebuilders who ask for top dollar.

If you have a 302, then the mazda is a better choice as far as gear ratios.
For the 300 and 351W, the ZF is a better choice because neither engine needs to be revved to make power.

If you're building up the engine regardless what it is, the mazda will more than likely break.
