hey guys im new here on the forum. ive got a 03 6.0 with about 123k on it. It idles very rough untill it gets up to temp, even when its not very cold out at night. It blows white smoke also untill it warms up. Even when its warm if i get on it hard it will blow white smoke. For example it only got down to about 57F here last night and it took quite a while for it to get to normal. Ive herd a lot of people taking then to the delaler to get a "flash". im not quite sure what that means though. so A. what is a flash? and B. about how much would it cost to have the dealer do this? thanks guys. u seem to be a lot of help
My first thought is a glow plug not working giving you the white smoke on startup and running rough. Second thought would be an injector giving problems streaming fuel instead of a mist into cylinder.
Sorry to say but yes these engines are a no simple solution engine. The dealership should be able to check the computer for codes and this will lead them to the problem/problems. good luck and please let us know what happens.
oh i also forgot to add that ive been running powerservice full additive for a while but i dont think that has anything to do with it. it was doing this before
This seems to be a common problem with the early 6.0's. I only know this because I had the same problem and the guys here helped me out. I got lucky and only had to get the new flash. Cost me $125, but that was money well spent. She runs better than ever now. Good luck

I'm betting on a couple of bad glow plugs. mine does the same thing with 3 bad GP's the key here is if it gets better when it warms up it's probably GP's if it was a fuel or injector problem I think it would stay the same but I'm no expert by any stretch.
A reflash is simply an update to the onboard computer programming.
Tell your dealer you would like the TSB 07-05-04 performed on your truck.
No diag. involved, just the reflash, it will make a dramatic improvement, regardless of other problems you may or may not have. Should take around an hour.
