'03 6.0 Excursion

Am getting real serious about taking ownership of a cherry, '03 Excursion 6.0 diesel, 42K miles. I had an earlier 7.3 in a 2000 Excursion, but due to divorce had to part with it. This '03 has been garage kept, never spent a night in the driveway unless while traveling. The original owner is extremely **** about mantenance on his vehicles and has every service receipt. He purchased it as a showroom demo from a dealer in Detroit and babied it al the way home to AZ. He insists on NOT getting any of the flash updates as the vehicle has performed flawlessly for him and insists Ford detunes them with the flash updates, which theoretically makes the motor last longer, but turns them into a real dog. I have driven this thing and it does run great. Do I need to take it in for the flash updates, or is it indeed a factory "neutering" to reduce warranty claims? I know there is a lot of talk of "issues" with the '03/'04 versions of this engine, what should I be aware of if I buy this thing? How can I minimize the chances of having a problem with this 1st year engine?

I bought my '03 F350 6.0L almost two years ago. To my knowledge the only problems with it were a blown turbo and one bad injector, which were replaced just before I bought it. Since then I haven't had any problems. I think any issues that these motors had were worked out and you shouldn't have any real problems with it. As for the flash updates, I don't know, but I'm sure someone who does will let you know.
