8ft bed on the superduty..how many yards is it capable of holding without packing and overflowing? If my memory serves me right it looks like 2 easy 2 1/2 comfortably.
Lessee...it's like 75" wide, 20" tall and 96" long, so 144,000 cu in, or about 83 cubic feet, or about 3 cubic yards, minus the wheel wells. In reality it's probably a little less than that, so you're probably right about fitting 2.5 cu yards comfortably.
I would think if you let the pile heap (so the top is taller than the sides of the bed) you could easily get 3 or more yards in. However, with pretty much anything I can think of that you would be buying by the yard you will be overloaded well before you run out of room in the bed. (2500lbs/yard for dirt, 2700lbs/yard gravel)
Beerstalker is right about the liklihood of a weight overload before a volume overload, except for mulch. I regularly carry 2 yards of mulch and it doesn't strain the F250 at all. There's still room left, but the place I buy from loads with a 1 yard bucket, so 3 yards would be too mu(l)ch?

i wish i stayed in school...instead i have to work crazy hours and not know anything about math...
Yeah, I didn't think about mulch (been working on mining stuff too long). I think mulch is around 800lbs a yard for the most common stuff, so you should be able to hold 3 yards without overloading.
I'll second, or third, or whatever the others have said, you'll be overloaded before over "volumed". I haul dirt/gravel from time to time and one yard normally puts me over the payload capacity but I think the yards I get are a little more than one yard.
I use to load trucks for a living and you can put 4 yards of mulch in a truck but it is heaped. 3 yards get you a small heap that is not too bad. I have had 4 yards in my chevy 1500 4.3 with no problems.
