I have a couple questions on a 2003 Ford Explorer EB w/ the 4.6 Liter V8 Engine...
1) Does this engine have timing belts that need to be replaced at 75000 miles or timing chains? I've heard differing stories...
2) Where is the fuel filter located and is it difficult to replace?
3) Does the rear window washer have a separate resovoir for holding the washer fluid. Right now it is not working. I can hear what sounds like a pump running when I try to wash the rear window but no fluid comes out. Their is plenty of fluid in the resovoir under the hood and the front washers work fine.
4) Have any other Explorer owners received any information from Ford about the rear hatch trim piece cracking? Such as when a recall will be issued.
Well I don't have an Explorer but I have an 03 and can help with some of your ?s
1. You motor has timing chains! No need to replace.
2. The fuel filter should be under the truck attached to the frame back towards the tank. Not that hard to change but takes a special tool. You can get at your auto store, just ask them for it.
3.Now I'm not shore on this but there should be a tank inside the back of the truck for washer fluid for the back window. Maybe in the tailgate or some little compartment back there.
Can't help you on # 4 sorry.
#4. I have the 02 XLT V6, as far as the Haynes book , no info. I only have 1 water bottle for the wipers, front and back. Just before the fire wall, on the right side of the engine, is a " T " connection, check for a pluged up hose. Not sure how to check if the spray tip is pluged at the rear window. You may want to remove the trim, at the back of the roof, at the rear window, to see if you can get at the hose. Just an thought. Good luck.
#4. The same thing happened to my EB explorer. pissed me off, I was washing my truck about a month ago and noticed it, no marks/scratches near the crack I'm like what the hell it's a clean crack. I have had this truck since new. I'm puzzled??? I'm shopping for new explorer soon so I'm just going to leave it.
older explorers (96) have a washer tank in the left rear fender well. newer units do not, they have only the front pump-tank.
the rear hatch panel is glued on does not allow the sheetmetal and plpastic to expand at different rates. when you wash a cold car with hot water or take it out of a warm garage on a very cold day, the plastic can crack. it is a known problem, newer glue is used these days, but no recall.
Word on the street is , get the new plastic pannel from ford, along with the new and improved glue, remove old with strong putty knife, clean, mount the new Items, paint, and your done. Or take it to ford, and pay them to do it, It is their pain in the rear to start with.
If you're 6ft and about 220lbs you may want to put it up on a lift or jackstands. It was a very tight fit for me to get under and pull the fuel filter. My arms/hands were in such an uncomfortable position, I couldn't get the fuel line disconnected with the special tool. Although I need to get jack stands, I ended up having my local mechanic guy do it.
