Nope and if you have an 89-90 E4OD that is dead, toss it casing and all. The "first run" E4OD's were so bad that the next production run altered the unit so much that even the casing isn't worth using to rebuild or reman. the unit because of the mods necessary to do the upgrade. (This info comes from a local trans. specialist who has rebuilt three of them for me alone and since he will actually WORK on them, he gets a LOT of them in).

Your Powertrain Control Module is BAD?! Thats a one in several thousand possibility. PCM failure is exceedingly rare. At any rate its located behind the passenger kick panel near the floor. Just make absolutely certain that if you do find it necessary to replace the unit, that it is from a truck with the same engine/tranny package and preferrably the same model year.

E4OD and PCM

Thanks for the info. My E4OD is a 91 model. Is that garbage as well? I thought the PCM is under the instrument panel on the driver side. Dude, my tranny shifts the same when the harness connector to the solenoid pack is connected or when it's not. Not getting any fire down there at all. Tranny guys don't want to charge me an arm and a leg. So they say to do it myself. Most people thinks it's the PCM "the computer". I know it sounds awful odd as well. Maybe it's my TPS or ECT sensor...I have heard they can really foul up transmission performance. But it has to be coming from the harness connector or the harness itself. Anyways, sorry to be a pain in the butt. I appreciate the advice my friend.

Ryan

P.S. This truck only has 69K on it, it's in super shape and I paid 2,400 for it tax included! I don't think I can get anything similar even at an auction.

I run my 95 Bronco 351 E40d with 4:56 and 35inch tires.
I run the trans on the street with the O/D off and only run the O/D when on the hyway going more the 50mph.

Many updates occured. Solenoids, etc. Well, here is my problem. I want that tranny out of there....would prefer a remanufactured one for a 95-96 with a warranty. Autozone has some wonderful options all with 3 year warranties. Can I do this...without screwing with the wiring harness.
Why would you shift an auto into neutral at a stop light? The E40D in my Bronco went 247k miles on the factory tranny fluid!!! Yes, you read that right. I bought the truck from a tranny shop. It was the owners son's vehicle. He bought it new, and he put it up for sale after the rebuild so he could get a Powerstroke F250 4X4. Owner of the tranny shop told me to leave the filter/fluid alone, and gave me a 3 yr/36k warranty. Mine is a 93.

Well, 93 had some major mods over the 91 model. That's probably why yours lasted so long. I put the tranny in neutral to put just a little less stress on the tranny. If it's not in gear there is no stress on it.

Thumbs down 91 E4OD Problems

Hey buddy....I am still having fits with my tranny. I have replaced the TPS, ECT and the sensor on the rear differential. I also put in another brand new solenoid pack, changed the filter and filled the pan with fluid. I cleaned the neutral safety switch harness connector and the solenoid connector. Now, the truck takes like ten seconds to go into reverse or first gear. It slips like a SOB, but once it gets going it shifts perfect. Before it shifted really really rough. I have only driven it about one mile since my last repair. The truck sometimes won't even start at all....no juice. So, I think it may be the computer. I have even heard that sometime the two wires that run from the - battery terminal to the ground by the radiator can cause this.

Get this, I picked up a computer out of a 90 with a 302 and an AOD after I did all the above repairs on it. I did this for a reason! The transmission acted the same exact way. That means I am limp mode somehow. I have heard a vehicle speed sensor, transmission temperature sensor, or neutral safety switch can cause this. It has to be one of those or the computer or the solenoid connector. It still only throws code 624. Problem is, I can't find any place that has the neutral safety switch connector or solenoid pack connector. I don't think I can take apart the connectors and put the fresh part of the wires back in the connectors...I was trying to piggyback it. By the way I stress connectors because this sucker had a nasty oil pan gasket leak and there was oil coated and caked on the tranny.

Man, I am in desperate trouble, I need to use this truck to put a new roof on the house. Obviously, I am not wealthy or I would pay somebody to fix the truck and put on a new roof. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I will do whatever I can to help you out somehow.

Ryan

MLPS aka nuetral safety switch

Code 634 would suggest the MLPS

E4OD changes

The cases are the same on the outside but they made changes to some lube holes and the channel casting is thicker to stop warping.

89-94 are Interchangeable.

Then beginning at the start of production for 95, all of the e4od's were produced using a new-design solenoid pack that will not interchange with previous models. The new pack has a new design vehicle harness connector. YOU MUST USE 95-97 ECM. After that they changed the name to 4R100 (98-up) and put in more updates with a new solenoid pack that has a PWM lock-up sol.

I think a major problem is people jump in in the morning, fire it up and off they go. I idle mine until the idle kicks it's self down. This allows the tranny to get its juices flowing.
