I have a 97 F150 4x2 with the 4.6 engine. It has 154,000 miles on it. The problem is with the gear selector lever on the column. In park the truck will start with no problem. But when you go to move the shift lever it will not come out of park. Tried moving the steering wheel either way, no difference. Turn the key to the off position. Then move the key out of the off position it releases the level. I can now move the level to neutral and restart the engine. From here I can move the level to reverse or drive with no problems. Put the level in park, the level can not be move out of park again. Have to shut the engine off and turn the key out of the off position. If you turn the key to where the lights come on the dash panel it will not move. Dose anyone know if there is a solenoid that locks the level in place. I have looked at the Haynes manual electrical diagrams. It doesn't show a lock. I have a Ford anti theft system installed when I bought the truck. Any help will kindly appreciated.
Check your brake lights. The brake light circuit is what pulls the interlock circuit and releases the shifter interlock. If your brake lights are out, you have to use the work-around...
