Unhappy Speedo not working right!!help

I have a 98 Explorer sport.. I'm having a problem with my speedo. It will work sometimes and sometime it just shuts itself off. Anyone have any ideas?? Could it be the speed sensor? It will work it i let it sit for about 10 minutes. Does the ABS sensors have anything to do with this. I know 1 of my abs sensors is buggered. Thanks for any help.

Don't know if this helps but the Ford service manual for 98' says: The 4WABS module derives it's speed signal from the rear axle speed sensors all included in the 4WABS system. It has a picture of the VSS on the rear axle.

I got an email saying that the VSS and abs sensor on the rear are the same thing. I'll have to take it out this weekend and clean it up...can you send me that pic. My Hayne manual shows it on the transfer case.. Just trying to save a few buckos

Here is one showing the order of the speed signal.

Just curious, If it is the VSS or WABS, should the cruise control still work since it wouldn't be able to tell the speed of the vehicle. I tried mine last night on my way home and it worked at the speed i set it at when the speedo was workin?
