my wife's friend just got a job as a waitress. she is training right now andnot doing the full job.
she said for the job so far, to get hired fully, she has had to interview, take a 400 question test, a 25 question essay test and then interview again!
all of this for a dang waitress job??? you got to be kidding me.
she told them to...well.....you know and walked out in the middle of the 400 question test.
i mean jeez, i had less hassle getting hired on with the state department and i would consider that quite a bit more important than being a waitress.
but i guess a company can make any requirement when there are a thousand people applying for one position.
who knows, maybe one day they will require degress to be a waitress or even a dishwasher.
oh, i fully agree, the only way i know they get away with those rules is because there are hardly any jobs around where i am at.
she worked at the same restraunant in knoxville and there were not near the amount of requirments, so she knows its not company wide policy.
i just thought it was kind of funny. it took me 3 hours to get my state department job working on security systems, and after 4 hours of testing, she got up and left.
we were just talking and comparing job requirments vs importance of jobs.
i remember in the Navy when i was on the sub, i used to do nuc weapon escorts also, i did the requirments and qualified for the job. when i transfered to the security dept, they had like a thousand things to do just to qualify to be a guard for the food store. but they waivered me in so i didn't have to go through the hassle.
i remember seeing last week in the paper "office assistant wanted, must have 3+ years experience and experience in data bases, bachelors degree required, pay $7 - $12 an hour. pay commensurate with experience"
wow! all that money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sad thing is, there is someone with a degree that probably took it because can't find anything else and doesn't want to move.
i see it now, the test was about discrimination, not about the job, including 50 questions on about the naacp. also 3 videos all about how not to discriminate against blacks and all the questions were aimed towards not discriminating against blacks.
she can handle friday nites, she has been a waitress for a few years before with no problems, she thought she would just make some easy spending money without much hassle.
Somebody that's unemployed refuses to complete a test for job applicant's? Like what, they have something better to do? It does seem a bit much for a waitressing job. But maybe it was to weed out those that had poor english reading and comprehension skills.
Heck, for all we know, the first instruction on the test was to go to question 400 and answer: "Will you work nights, holidays and weekends? YES or NO. You are done. Now turn in your test." That would probably whittle a thousand applicants down to a managable number of interviewee's!
edit: why did this suddenly turn into a race discrimination topic? Knock that off unless that was your hidden agenda. And then you'll still have to knock that off!

actually no, she did a bunch of the questions, she doesn't need the money, you don't have to presume that everyone who is looking for work needs money.
i am looking for work, but i don't need to, i have plenty of money to live on, i just am greedy and want more, but i am not going to slave myself out just for it.
i imagine the first test and interview would have weeded out anyone with a literacy problem.
but this place was a while ago was accused of racism, (the chain, not this paticualr place) so i guess they threw in a bunch of diversity and discrimination questions.
she has worked at the same restraunant before for a few years, just a different location.
this wasn't an overly serious thread, its just amusing to me the requirments to go through for being a waitress, i guess i will refer to the other thread someone posted "40 years ago" how nice.

Sorry, my bad. I presumed to think those were your presumptions, not the actual test.
400 question exam? I have never heard of that before.
There are a lot of discerning employers. There are also a lot of careless employers. I swear, some waitresses I've dealt with couldn't have been hired for their looks or brains. Probably a laugh factor. How much can I laugh at, or how much can they make me laugh.
Don't get me wrong, waitresses with looks have some brains, waitresses with brains can get dolled up. But the dumb ones, there must have been some other motive for the employer to hire them.
I would have to guess that the test was 100 different questions asked four different ways each. They then look for inconsistencies in the answers. The test was probably developed by a diversity consultant and I would again have to guess that this "screening" process was the result of a settlement in a large class action lawsuit. All speculation but also based on past experiences.
i guess a little T&A doesnt go as far as it used to. those type of jobs are the ones getting hammered on for immigration reasons now a days, so tests like this will be a common thing for any type of job.
They probably figure if you can't make it through the 400 item test, you're probably not going to make it through a busy Friday night.
BINGO!
Its like an employer asking if you have a degree. It really has little bearing on whether you can do the job or not, it has more to do with telling the employer you are highly trainable and persistent. This questionnaire just weeded out a poor waitress (in their eyes) and saved her and the employer a bunch of time.
