Water pump bolt placement?

I was reading somewhere that if te water pump bolt placement isnt right it will make the ip not work properly. I didnt do my waterpump so I dont know what bolts were put where but what is the right spot for the larger bolts? and do I have to take the fanand all that off to do this? or is it accessible as it is in the engine?

the fan is removed first.there is a large nut behind the fan,and it is left hand thread.I use a "Ford" type wrench. like a thin monkey wrench. I put it on that nut and hit it with a hammer. Hit it in the direction that normally would be tightening it, while holding the fan with a cloth. That nut should then unscrew by hand. Just gently lay it down between the rad and shrowd. I remove the bolts one at a time, and I believe there is only two long ones. and they are (as I recall) much longer than the others. just mark the location on the new pump. Yes, if you drive the in the whole way the would contact the drive gear for the IP. Best of luck Phil . If I've forgotten anything, someone jump in please

It depends on which waterpump casting you have.

The early ones have short boss's cast into them, where the top bolts bolt onto the timing cover. There will be 2 shorter bolts for these two holes. The longer bolts will hit the IP timing gear, with a short boss casting.

Later castings have the longer boss's, and use all the same length bolts.

FWIW, this problem was addressed in like ....1986?. So unless your buying NOS parts. It should be the newer casting and come with 2 new 'longer' bolts and a little piece of paper explaining the change/procedure.

the pump I put in didnt come with anything but the pump and the gasket. I took one of the bolts out yesterday that the repair manual said would be longer, and the one I took out was long. I'm going to go ahead and finish changing out the injector O-rings and if the problem still occurs I will change the water pump bolts.

If you have the wrong bolts, it'll interfere with the IP timing gear. Causing severe damage. Have you started the engine yet?

On the older style Water pump with a boss height of .800" you MUST use 5/16 x 18 x 1 1/4" bolts

On newer style water pump with BH of 1.049" you use a 5/16 x 18 x 1 1/2" bolt.

Torque is....... 14 ftlbs .....use Permatex aviation sealant #3 on the upper 2 and lower 2 bolt heads and threads.......

I had the pump put in around Christmas. Truck ran fine for 2 days after I had it put in, and then it just died on me on the way home from wal mart. I started it up and it had no power, put the pedal to the floor and I only got up to about 10 mph and it sounded like it was idling, not my normal clank clank. Lots and lots of smoke was pooring out of the exhaust i mean I drove down the street and I couldnt see my buddys truck behind me. Im in the process of changing the return lines and the injector o rings, but I saw somewhere online about teh water pump bolt placement thing. I remember when my dads buddy was putting the pump in he had the bolts in the old one, and i not seeing them in there picked it up to see the broken part and they fell out. So that brings me here to asking if he didnt put them back in the right spot could that be my problem?

PLC since you are on and you tend to know a lot of things about our trucks, since I am currently replacing the return lines, and injector O- rings, and am having to take off the injection lines, is there an alternative line that I could use other than the hard lines the truck comes with? The har lines are so hard to move without bending, and it would make glowplug replacement as well as injector service a lot easier. If you know of anything let me know
