Transmission cooler

My E40D transmission has a 12x4x1 1/2 (72 cu in) oil cooler. I was looking at a larger one from Tru Cool. I use my truck to primarily tow and the trans sure could use some help in the summer. 1.How large should I go with a new cooler? 2. Can I buy another cooler to put in series with this one? 3. What are your thoughts about using a air cond condensor which would cover the whole radiator? 4. I will continue to run the oil through the radiator because I think it is important to get the tranny up to temp. What are your thoughts? It was suggested to get one with an external thermal bypass but I am afraid of that setup. Just something else to go wrong. Thanks for the help.

Only buy one that fits at least the towing weight maximum you will be loaded...... that is how they are sold......Never put more than one aux cooler in line as it will slow the flow of fluid. I have heard some want to do the A/C condensor, but never seen it done..

Don't you have to take into account what the ambient temp I will be towing in? Two years ago I was towing my loaded 5th wheel approx 10K pounds up long mountain passes in Colorado and it was 103degF. I'm surprised it didn't blow. If I remember, the trans temp was approx 125F.

Does that mean total truck wt and trailer wt combined? There is one in the catalog 53/4x11x11/2=94.88 cu in which is only 22.88 cu in larger. Seems small. It is for 19,000GVW

That would be your total weight. I think you have a point in terms of what and where you are towing. If in doubt, go one size larger. It isn't going to hurt anything. Don

As Don stated....... remember to drop out of OD anytime you start to lug or trans is hunting for a gear........ 355s can be a hard on trans. Has trans been upgraded to latest internals.

I have to 18000 gvw tru cool on my F350 with the EO4D, run in series with the rad. This is a "stacked cooler" which means it works like a radiator, flow in one side out the other, if your fluid is cool, it only runs through the first few cores, as temp increases, more of the cooler is utilized for cooling, works great, my temps have hardly got up above 150 F.

I turned my ac condenser into a trans cooler about 2 weeks ago. I Idon't have a temp guage to see what temps I run at but I know it has made a big differance. the cooler in the rad was almost plugged so very little cooling if anything was happening. The biggest cost was buying the transsmision line it took about an extra 1 1/2 Quarts of trans fluid when i get my temp guage I,ll pass along the
temp readings

125 degrees sounds a little low, with out side air at 100 plus. Where is your temp probe located ? Mine is located in the out let line to the trans cooler with a temp switch (set at 180) for my aux cooler fan, and in Texas summers the fan comes on quite a lot when towing up hill.

PLC7.3 Pete, I had it rebuilt with "bumped up " press and heavy duty torque conv. Don't like the way it "slides" into 3rd. TC locks up at same time (35-40) If I jump on it, it shifts pretty solid. Maybe I need to check FIPL?

KJLYPW Kevin, where did you get "stacked" cooler? I am looking at TRU COOL but don't see one. I would be happy with 150-180F while towing which I can do in Florida in summer but there are no hills. When I go out west the mountains are tough on my temps. You are in Powell and probably never see those temps.

DeanJ How big is your cooler? I don't know if I should oversize it to compensate for the ambient temp. I think as long as I run it through the rad it will achieve a MINIMUM temp which is important.

Thanks for all the valuable info from ALL of you. I appreciate it. Tom

I tow max 12K and truck is 8800? Therefore probably the next higher TRU COOL would be 24500 GVW or maybe larger? I know the E40D doesn't like heat. Tom

It looks like all the Tru Cool scoolers are Stacked plate or Fin and plate. You want to stay away from tube and fin. Dana makes Tru Cool. Don

Thankyou all for your input. I guess I will get at least a 28,000 GVW cooler. The radiator should keep the oil warm enough if I encounter cold weather. I'm a little nervous about getting the Tru Cool #4739 which has an external bypass and 40,000 GVW rating and 45,000 BTU rating. I would worry about the bypass operating correctly. Have any of you guys had any experience with this bypass? The theory seems good but I don't know how dependable the bypass would be. Any suggestions?
